Florestan

After that, going to take a cue from Florestan's posts to fill out the rest of my morning listening:

Please report on them.

Slatkin's VW performances are underrated IMO.

I like Martinu best when he is being playful.

I'll take my cue from Fergus:

Act I up to, and including, Una voce poco fa. Splendid performance.

Every time I hear this opera I understand why Rossini in comic mode was like a gush of fresh air breezing in a room filled with heavy perfumes. One of the greatest musical firebrands ever.

I've only listened to his recording of A London Symphony and I enjoyed it greatly.

Don't know this or some of the other Martinů works you've been hearing. He really is one of the 20th century's most underrated composers, and with such an enormous output to explore, too.

Martinů: Double Concerto for Two String Orchestras, Piano, and Timpani (Radom Chamber Orchestra (ROK) / Beethoven Academy Orchestra (OAB) / Maciej Zoltowski, conductor) - Recorded in May 2012 in the Penderecki Concert Hall in Radom, Poland. Quite fine, and with personnel likely off the radar for most listeners. Sound is very good, and shows off the internal voices.

Boccherini, Luigi (1743-1805) - Oboe & String Quintets + Sextets - 3 discs pulled from the 10-CD Capriccio box below - an excellent bargain (review HERE for the interested) - the only 'weak' performances IMO and the linked review are the two discs of the Guitar Quintets, but I have several other recordings of those works.  Dave :)

I have to admit to a little ocular-neural effort not to read that as Random Chamber Orchestra. Cracking performance!

Been a while since my last post! I was finalizing my entry for an orchestration challenge (Orchestration Online), so I haven't done much listening in the last couple of weeks.

Most recently, listened to two recordings of Aaron Copland's Short Symphony:

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
Marin Alsop

Orpheus Chamber Orchestra

While Alsop's version was perfectly fine, Orpheus was the clear winner for me. They bring a tightness of ensemble that's unparalleled, and they really get the complex rhythms that drive the piece.
So much great music, so little time...
