It seems like aligreto may have started an informal Poulenc festival here with his comments on Poulenc piano music. Today I listened to Trois pieces pour piano, Le Sage. Usually I don't do well with miniatures, but these seem to defy the rule.

Albinoni, Tomaso (1671-1751) - Oboe Concertos, Opp. 7/9 w/ Anthony Robson and Catherine Latham on period reproductions (Earle & Rogers, 1994 after Thomas Stanesby, London, c. 1710; Hasagawa, 1992 after Jacob Denner, Nuremberg 1720); also own the Brilliant box (both 3 CDs) on modern instruments; both recommended depending on your instrument preferences?  Dave :)

Nino Rota: Suite from La Strada (Christoph Koncz / Frankfurt Radio Symphony, recorded 8 September 2022) - Again and again, the Frankfurt crew are showing themselves to be among the best around—and with many different conductors. Koncz is new to me.

On the eve of Spain's national day (October 12th, the day of the discovery of America and of the Virgin of El Pilar — our answer to Fourth of July or Quatorze Juillet), some Spanish music.

Revisiting Jean-François Dichamp's intelligently programmed and beautifully played CD, in which the six pieces of Granados' Goyescas are interspersed with music by D. Scarlatti and Soler.

As of late, more I listen to Goyescas, the more I enjoy the work (and I've known this music since ever). Just some days ago I was listening to Jean-François Heisser's recording, which is also excellent.

This is proving to be the perfect accompaniment to my reading of Andrés Trapiello's book Madrid, which i picked up at a bookstore down the street from home this afternoon. Published in 2020, the book is part memoir, part history, part travel guide, but mainly a love song to this great city (which I'm not ashamed to admit I've been in love with myself for many, many years  :)). A great read!

EDIT:

More música española: Stefano Palamidessi plays guitar fantasias by Fernando Sor.

Verdi: Otello

Stirring! Only Falstaff is missing to conclude my Verdi opera traversal.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Nice! And IMHO (I'm not that much of a Verdian), you've left the best for the end. Falstaff is a miraculous score!

I agree Falstaff is an intriguing opera, actually it's one of the few Verdi's works I greatly appreciate! But I admit Otello is not bad either.

I thought you didn't enjoy Italian operas, Ilaria.

Looking forward to listening to Falstaff!

Yes, they don't appeal me very much, but there are exceptions and Falstaff is one of those. I hope you'll enjoy it when you listen to it, Cesar.  :)

Zwilich: Symphony No. 3

A fine work in a mid-last-century muscular American symphony kind of way (Mennin comes to mind).
