Greetings!  Not a lot of listening time over the weekend, though I did squeeze in some of Toscanini's Wagner, both from the RCA box and from TV broadcast -- I always find it fun to watch some of the old conductors at work.  I'm by no means an expert, but I'm fascinated in particular by the precise way Toscanini uses the baton -- the beat is so amazingly clear, at times it's like he's got an invisible string on the the end and is literally pulling the orchestra along in real time.  Great stuff... I was particularly impressed with his Siegfried Idyll, which is not usually one of my favorite pieces.

After that, some Bach, an old favorite to lower the blood pressure:   ;D

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

The release consists of live recordings made at a series of concerts. I suspect the "essential" tag was added by a Hanssler ad writer without much thought as to the repertoire that Norrington selected.

Quite reasonable. Thanks.

..or perhaps Norrington thought of it as essential. There is some very good music in the low K numbers, but I think at that time the serenades and divertimenti were more memorable than the symphonies.

In the Serenade for Strings - a work so perfect I thought it was untouchable - Svetlanov adds a chord! At the end of the first movement, he's apparently not satisfied with the ending and therefore has the orchestra play a full unison C at the end. And he has everyone hold the C as long as possible. I thought maybe the music player was malfunctioning. It adds a grim, dark feeling which is truly bizarre.

The K. 162 is pleasant, but nothing to write home about, methought.

Colourful sewing machine from Karl Richter.  Every couple of minutes there's a little idea which maybe makes it sound like a human being's playing and not a plucking droid. I don't think I can get to the end of a whole partita.

This one's a step in the right direction - but still, somehow I think - soulless - as if he's playing music for people to dance to almost. But it's lively at least.
