Shostakovich Symphony No. 4 in C minor Op.43 Andris Nelsons

j winter

Earlier today, orchestral music from Mendelssohn and Debussy, followed up by diving into Gieseking's Debussy on piano.  I had the Preludes in the old GPOC remastering, decided to take the plunge on the whole set...

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

-- William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

How are those Debussy orchestral recordings? I was not aware of them.

The new Geiseking release struck me as an instance where the master is dramatically better than the prior releases.

The Gatti Debussy is... OK.  I picked it up for literally a buck when I was last at Princeton.  You get La Mer, Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune, and Images.  The sound is good, the performances are a bit tame, particularly in La Mer, though I admit this was my first listen.  I will probably hang onto it, but I wouldn't advise paying full price for it with all the competition out there...

Bloch: Macbeth

A fine opera. The work has a sort of motto theme that also appears in the 3rd mov. from Respighi's Sinfonia Drammatica.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Oooh!  Already listening to it?!

PD

Aye. I hadn't listened to Martinů in some while (no fault of the composer's.)

I see that he wrote the Cello Sonatas, not in a compressed time-frame, exactly, but in fairly short order, though split between France and the US:

№ 1, H 277 (1939 Paris)
№ 2, H 286 (1941 Jamaica, Long Island)
№ 3, H 340 (1952 Vieux-Moulin)

Will report!

Mendelssohn, Felix (1809-1847) - Complete Piano Works w/ Anna-Marija Markovina - new arrival today from JPC, and still on sale there for half-price! (LINK) - 12 disc set; she performs on a Bösendorfer Imperial piano - a lot of research by many went into this project; Markovina wrote the excellent booklet notes - reviews attached, if interested.  Dave :)

Zemlinsky: Sinfonietta

There are parts of this work that remind me of Roussel.

A great recording! Capriccio often releases little jewels about Austrian composers, how brilliant.
I'll follow, but with a different recording:

Yes, it is, Ilaria. Capriccio has championed this composer by recording much of his stuff, mostly his operas.

Beautiful, especially the 2nd movement. This feels like a successor to the Brahms trio.
