Change of pace and complexity to keep me awake on a hot train! Tippett is another composer that it took me a while to appreciate, but I'm glad I persevered.

Tippett is thorny, just the way I like music to be thorny. (The only bit I didn't like is that symphony that starts with the sound of someone breathing.) You've reminded me it's been too long since I listened to his music.

Seems fine, neo baroque organ not too big (12'), sober and mainstream HIP performance. Nice.

Listening now 🙂. Anything to break the ennui of Nuneaton train station. Although I like it really.

Final piece of music before landing me at my designated station. I do like Tippett's unpredictability and energy. I particularly like the driving energy of the opening movement of #2, balanced against the restraint and relative tunefulness of the lento.

Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

What a terrific program! I'd be glad to attend a concert like this if given the opportunity.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Symphonic Addict

A most engaging disc, mostly for the Piano Quartet.

Quote from: Cato on April 25, 2023, 03:54:12 PMHi Karl!

Thanks for the reminder of a wonderful composer!

Lukas Foss!!!  He used to be mentioned in the same breath as Gunter Schuller as "The Future of American Music"!

Here is one big reason why people thought so highly of him:

Time Cycle!

CD 1

These are not the well-known famous organs, but beautiful nonetheless. The sound is such that you feel present and connected in the space of the recording.

Love the recording!

Revisiting this CD (prompted by a post by @Mandryka in the 'French Music Exploration" thread):

The contents is Messiaen's early (1929) Huit Préludes for piano, and his very late (1991) Pièce pour piano et quatuor à cordes, followed by Saariaho's Prélude and Ballade for solo piano, and her Je sens un deuxième cœur for piano, viola and cello.

As good as I remember it. I bought this disc at the Harmonia Mundi store in the company's home town of Arles (all Harmonia Mundi shops have now closed AFAIK); must have been 10 years ago now.

I reached into the Salonen Big Box and pulled together a little home concert program of three 20-minute pieces.

Stravinsky - Symphony in Three Movements (with Philharmonia)
Shostakovich - Piano Concerto No. 1 (with Yefim Bronfman and LA)
Hindemith - Symphonic Metamorphosen (with LA)

I love the Faust Symphony, and Bernstein/Boston is one of the best recordings.

That Salonen set is high on the list of big boxes I hope get rereleased - along with Boulez/Sony, the Charles Groves British Music set, Reiner/RCA, de Larrocha/Decca, Cluytens/Erato... and about a dozen others!  ;D  Hey, they rereleased the Szell box, so anything is possible, right?

TD: from another more recent box:

Prokofiev
Romeo and Juliet Suites nos. 1 and 2
Philadelphia Orchestra
Riccardo Muti

(on CD)

As with everything else I've sampled from this box, excellent performances!
So much great music, so little time...
