My Musical Musings

Böhm finds an undercurrent of unease and melancholy in the first two movements while allowing the orchestra to play with vigor and incisiveness. As a result tempi are slowish but it all sounds alert and energetic. The Variations are wonderful. One of Brahms' most delightful confections, a feast for wind players. The WP play it as if they own the piece. Böhm knows better than get in their way. A wonderfully satisfying brahms repast.

Bachtoven

He's a brilliant, powerful player, and the sound is excellent. The solo piano version of the Grosse Fuge sounds incredibly hard to play.

This last week I've been listening to Beethoven's first cello sonata (op 5/1) a LOT. I've fallen into the trap of ignoring it in favour of later sonatas but the Isserlis/Levin recording is simply sensational - so much energy. Right now I'm listening to Wispelwey/Lazic, which is also very good but for pure exhilaration Isserlis/Levin is on its own.

Isserlis/Levin is my favorite as well.

I'm really enjoying this cycle but I hear a lot of extraneous thumping in this concerto. Cover.jpg
