Marvelous, a revelation and great discovery. Finally a comprehensive collection of Howell's Orchestral works, in such good performances and sound.

I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

Quote from: prémont on June 05, 2025, 02:31:39 PMI have listened to the complet youtube recording and I admit that there are moments where Sohn seems somewhat more emotionally involved in the playing. This is particularly true of the da capo of the third movement's theme but also of most of the first movement. His interpretation is among the good ones, but I have heard many op. 110's which engaged me more as a listener.

My impression from his complete sonata set is that he tends to be more analytical and neutral than deeply expressive, and he is often a bit muscular showy in his choice of ultrafast tempi and his left hand attack. I don't think the youtube recording is identical with the recording of the sonata on the cycle, but without A/B test I can't say for sure. However throughout the cycle his appproach is relatively consistent, and I don't recall op. 110 as being particularly expressive.

Yes (you refer to Op.110, but am sure you mean Op.109), his playing in the first movement engages me immediately too, it feels so naturally conceived and responsive. I agree he can be analytical at times, but in this sonata (the only one I've heard so far), that leads to some very illuminating voicings I think, which for me only enhance the interest and depth of the music.

I'm very curious if the youtube recordings are the ones used in the complete set. Will be heading off to Op.110 next.

Yes, of course I meant op.109, sonata no. 30.  :)

I see that quite a lot of his LvB sonatas are on youtube. Nice, since it's said to be impossible to get them from elsewhere.

The Third CD from this excellent set..................

As promised, I listened to the complete Chopin Nocturnes performed by Nikita Magaloff (1912-1992) on Spotify, and these works are beautifully performed (apparently the box below was from the 1970s, i.e. ADD - the sound was excellent!).

For myself the last few days, Schumann's Piano Music on the two boxes below in my collection - compared several discs of each yesterday and enjoy both about equally (no pruning out this time -  :D ), but today decided to finish up w/ Dana Ciocarlie - 13 discs in each one.  Dave

Le Sacre du Printemps

This recording apparently met with Stravinsky's approval. He had previously spoken disparagingly of Karajan's first recording, which in my opinion is one of the most successful, or at least the one that satisfies me the most.

Quote from: AnotherSpin on June 05, 2025, 10:19:04 PMOh, how utterly delightful! Shepherds piping away for their little sheep or goats... Such an idyllic, pastoral scene in the USSR of the 1930s. No sign of millions rotting in the Gulags, no trace of Ukraine starving to death in a carefully engineered famine. Just flutes, fields, and the sweet scent of Russian propaganda.

Totally out of line.
