My first encounter with Chamayou was just a few months ago, when he and Barbara Hannigan did a superb recital here. After that, would be eager to hear him in almost anything. How do you like this?

I haven't delved deeply into his discography, which seems eclectic. But judging from the Mendelssohn recording he is an exceptional pianist. This recording is some of the best, or perhaps THE best I've heard. (Only worthy competitors: Perahia, Moiseiwtisch, Rachmaninov)

I know we should be grateful it available after so many years at all, but the fact that it was not issued on disc adds to the end-of-an-era feeling. I guess I have to figure out if I want to go into downloads...and possible burn them on disc...or stick to streaming.

And (lossless) downloads are not cheap !

Two composers who were unknown to me, which is not really surprising for there are many others I do not know of. It's a pleasant getting to know the music they wrote for the Treble Viol, and well performed it. Two hours and 23 minutes of super relaxing music written on a high and entertaining level, played by Simone Eckert as if it were the easiest thing to do, but the handling of the instrument makes it quite a challenging feat.These somewhat older recordings can go as a reference performance, for it is perfectly done. The synergy and balance is very much present, and it is well recorded. Immersing oneself in this flow of harmonious and melodious music is a treat and not a task. As a whole a rewarding project, and well recorded. It is not a wise thing to play such music at a high level, but just enough to make you aware, for there are some beautiful details to find. The embellishments are at times gorgeous.

The title says all about the music on this disc. Interesting to say the least. The mix does not complement each other, for in this case it makes no connection at all. Handel, Marais, Purcell, Telemann, or Royer, all so different in their cultural background as Persian music, it's just anachronistic and therefore not working. And the performance of the Neoclassical Ensemble of Tehran is tame and lame most of the time. The marriage should enter in divorce proceedings. Sound is good but rather dry. The Tombak improvisation has some sparkles, but not enough to keep the relation healthy.
