Spotted Horses

It seems I've been listening to Les Vents Francais for weeks. Marnard, Sonata for piano and winds.

Most music for wind Quintet for Piano and Winds tends to be witty and charming. This work breaks the mould, with a rather symphonic approach, with some strict counterpoint and dramatic harmonic gestures. Thoroughly enjoyed. Reminds me I should explore the collection of Magnard Chamber music that has been released by the Timpani label.
Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.

Ullmann's Drei hebräische Knabenchöre: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-x_F7TvaYqg

His last composition before meeting annihilation at the hands of the Nazis. Unsurprisingly, it is a pure and pure can get - a cappella boys singing short choruses, music not for great halls, but music for an enclosed space with no windows, an echo chamber, a resounding chamber - a gas chamber. There are few things more tragic than the death of art.

These performances deserve more attention, in my opinion. They have been rather poorly received by some, but don't be swayed by the many critics who want to label their own taste as the standard. This is a refined Mozart, beautifully transparent with wonderful playing from the English chamber orchestra.

Symphonies  32,35 Haffner"& 39

Many people dismiss the early symphonies as shallow and uninteresting but I beg to differ. Big time. Every time I listen to them I find something interesting. Last week I listened to the KV 133 from this set and fell in love with the Andante. I must have listened to it a least 10 times ever since. One of the most bittersweet things Mozart ever wrote.

I don't recognize the other two songs, but the text of the middle one is the last two verses of Psalm 150.
