The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

The Complete Organ Works of Francisco Correa de Arauxo: Correa in the New World

Robert Bates

CD 4, 5

Two discs bring to completion a remarkable set devoted to the music of Francisco Correa de Arauxo. Recorded on organs in Mexico and the United States, they lift the organ tradition into something bright and transparent, like sunlight high in the mountains: clear, weightless, luminous.

Correa's Facultad Orgánica feels almost airborne. The melodies rise and twist like threads of light, each voice floating free rather than anchored by a heavy bass. The music is not woven but suspended; the notes hover and fade with the ease of birds gliding on warm air.

This lightness is not emptiness. It is closer to transcendence. His rhythms give the impression of breath: in, hold, out. The music does not so much fill the space as illuminate it.

Un concert pour Madame de Sevigne.
Works by: Anonymous, Marin Marais, Jean Baptiste Lully, Robert de Visee, Jacques Martin Hotteterre, Andre Danican Philidor.
Performed by: Marc Hantai, Georges Barthel, Eduardo Egüez, Philippe Pierlot.

Recorded in 2009, this CD sounds remarkably fresh and alert. Lined up are performers that can compete with the best, and they sound the works. There is a balance and ease in this interpretation, that sends the message of all clear. I often talk about synergy and internal coherence with a reason, hence this perfect example, for that makes, what is played, and without it it's all empty rhetoric and noise! I simply love what I hear, and it is recorded in the warm acoustic of the Church of Basse-Bodeux. Not to be missed. You definitely can't go wrong on this recording. Too lovably ;D
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Stylus Phantasticus.
The hidden writing.
Recording: Chiesa di S. Ignazio di Loyola (Santo Spirito) Pistoia, Italia, 2021.
Organ by Willem Hermans, 1664. Pitch: a=440 Hz. Temperament?
Irene de Ruvo, Organ.

The organ of Spirito Santo is preserved in excellent condition. Due to the great respect of the organ builders who maintained the organ in the past, it is largely in its original condition, and even the specification has never been altered: the reed stops are the oldest preserved in Italy! I am however in two minds about how it is played by Irene de Ruvo. she has quite an unforgiving tone, maybe augmented by the hard acoustics of this church. And she speeds things up unnecessarily, the drive is one of power and determination, rather then concentrating on the compositions themselves. Maybe I am wrong in my observations, but I doubt it. The recording is clear but hard in tone. Love the instrument though.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,

Melodies of Love and Death-Opera senza Parole.
Arranged by Bob Zimmerman.
Osiris trio.

These are no simple arrangements, let me start by saying this. To re-arrange opera melodies for violin and Piano gives fine results though, often surprising even. Subtle emotional realizations of opera arias, well performed and recorded. This is a fun ride, and not without pleasure I might add. Opera without the vocals, I rather like that. :)

Unfortunately the Dutch Osiris Trio, consisting of Peter Brunt (violin), Larissa Groeneveld (cello), and Ellen Corver (piano), is calling it a day. After 33 years of playing together, they will be saying goodbye to the concert stage during the Orlando Festival in Kerkrade in August, 2022.

As a young kid I went on the evening of the 11th door to door with a paper lantern/lampoon collecting candy.

Yes getting as much candy as I could, collecting sustenance for a whole year sometimes, but that was 63 years ago, and times have changed.
Yes also, to the interesting recordings I saw on the flora label, I already selected some of them.

Jerzy Fitelberg (1903– 1951)
Chamber Works.
First recordings.
ARC Ensemble

Fitelberg, was one of the composers who had to emigrate from Europe because of their Jewish ancestry. Highly esteemed in his new home in New York until the 1950s, his music was unfortunately forgotten and but happily rediscovered. his music are all worthwhile rarities, and to me fascinating. There is a distinct otherworldly vibe, challenging and vibrant in its performance. Detailing is amazing throughout, and expression keeps your imagination going without fail. Love this very much. ARC ensemble is delivering the goods, and Chandos made a clear recording of it.
