Quote from: VonStupp on December 10, 2025, 08:19:48 AMIt takes a little getting used to Baumann's vibrato, but otherwise there is little to complain about here.

On further listening, I think it is rather tight vibrato from the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in their highest ranges. It is a quality I am not used to from this ensemble at any rate.

We've lost someone very close, so family came over from Scotland to be together. The power is still off 11–13 hours a day, but the rocket and drone attacks have quieted down a little. The worst of it feels like it's easing.

When the electricity returns, I play music constantly; the house fills with sound and warmth again.

In the end, the real sadness never lingers in the present moment itself; it only lives in our thoughts. The now is always gentle, and peaceful.

We all see what happens in the Ukraine, and how this country is treated by others, we see and feel the suffering that is going on in your land, and I for one feel this acutely every single minute of the day. Take heart that many people are behind you all the way, and my thoughts and prayers are always with you and your family and the Ukrainian nation.
I fervently hope that the coming Christmas time may be peaceful but I doubt that very much. Evil has conquered this world, and are the players in this drama.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

More of this. Unfortunately the sound engineering by Symphonia is not on the level of the recordings by Nasillo on ARCANA or Zig-Zag....

Beethoven: String quartet in F major, op.18/1

I'm finally starting on my recent-ish purchase of the Guarneri set. In the case of op.18 I've no complaints with my existing set from the Tokyo Quartet, and I suspect there will be quite a bit of similarity in approach - not least because the two cycles are from the same era and there seems to be a direct correlation between date of recording and degree of violence in Beethoven quartet playing.

The 1st movement is proceeding nicely right now.

Best Wishes at such a difficult time!

At the moment, after writing another part of my new novel about characters enduring the Hunnic invasions on the Roman Danube frontier c. A.D. 440 and beyond, I am listening to:

What you hear is music that succeeds imaginatively in transcending compositional technique, and ends in a perfect symbiosis of choral perfection. This neglected contemporary of Lassus is a master equal to the most eminent (and more familiar) European polyphonists of the 16th century, but forgotten nevertheless. Kerle's music confirms his extraordinary skill at combining and varying melodic material and in creating vocal sonorities of unusual richness and power. There is a perfect balance between harmonic rhythm and melody and vibrancy in expression of the choir. The venue in which it is recorded, blows up the sound a bit, and the choir sounds larger as it is. Detailed it is though, all voice groups clearly defined. This is a first time for me with this composer. Somehow I missed this release in the past.
