Lynn Harrell was 76. I got to see a lot of him at my university, where he was a professor with a studio of cello students. Seemed like a good man, from that distance.

Sorry to hear of their passings.  I know that I have at least one disc with Harrell--which I enjoy...his Beethoven disc with Ashkenazy.

I don't know Barkauskas' works...his name sounds familiar.  I believe that he was a Lithuanian composer?

Best wishes,

May God rest their souls. This sad occasion is the first I've ever heard about Barkauskas.

Sad news indeed.
I have Lynn Harrell performing Walton's Cello Concerto I think.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

His version of Dvorak Cello Concerto with the LSO is my favorite performance.  He was also a character and deeply respected here in LA casting a very long shadow with deep influences of generations of performers.  RIP kind sir.

That's sad to hear.

Lynn Harrell's performance of Lutosławski's cello concert is one of my more memorable concert experiences.

Despite having gone to Vilnius two or three times, including a trek to the offices of the Lithuanian New Music organization, I still only have two CDs by Barkauskas. ("Sun" and "Jeux" may be the only two CDs that feature his music only. The other things I found online are all mixes of various composers.)
