I thought the cruz of the joke was that they were both (unknowingly) on the same side. The only difference was the name they chose for their God.

Yes, I think we're approaching the same idea from different angles  8)

They both have the same image, see it in different ways . . . and in the back of my mind I knew there was that rabbit/duck optical illusion, but in my case there was kind of a clunky process of rediscovering that, and piecing it in to this cartoon.

I had the same reaction. Rabbit god? Wait, duck/rabbit ...
