Looking for recommendations of recordings of the cello concertos of Boccherini.

There are a couple in the big Vivarte box, also (I believe) available separately - G476 in D and G573 in C, played by Anner Bylsma and Tafelmusik.  I can't pretend they made any great impression on me (which is entirely my failing, as there are many, including perhaps yourself, who hold Boccherini in high esteem), but I should have thought that the late great Dutchman would be a fairly safe recommendation.  I think he's recorded some of the others as well.

I don't it's your failing. Mine impression was similar.
Whether it was the music or the fact that it doesn't sound Spanish-Italian at all, I'm not sure but I think the latter.

There's a 4 CD Vivarte box with Byslma playing some of the concertos, sonatas, and other chamber works.
Naxos has a 3 CD series with the complete group; I have it and it seems as good as Byslma, but the Amazon prices suggest it's out of print.
There's a 3 CD set from Brilliant with a soloist and orchestra I've never heard of that's definitely out of print.

Beyond that there are individual concertos recorded by various cellists like Maisky and Isserlis.

The 4 CD Bylsma set might be your best bet. To me these concertos sound like mainstream 18th century works.

Hi Dave B - in my collection are the two volumes w/ Tim Hugh and 3 discs (12 Boccherini Cello Concertos) w/ Julius Berger, apparently playing Luigi's own cello (quote below) - the stated date may be incorrect, i.e. 1988 is printed on the back of the three cardboard jackets in the box.  Looking on Amazon USA, there are plenty of other options including a 3-CD Brilliant box of the same 12 works done by Berger.  Dave :)

QuoteBerger is focused on the rediscovery of the complete works by Luigi Boccherini[1][2] and Leonardo Leo. He recorded all cello concertos by Boccherini in 1992, including a twelfth concerto which was then recently rediscovered, on Boccherini's own Stradivari instrument. (Source)
