What are some of your favourite pairings of a concerto and a symphony to listen to back-to-back? They don't have to be by the same composer, although they can be.

I honestly have never given this much thought as I don't really see them going hand-in-hand in any particular way. I appreciate symphonies and concerti, but I never thought of pairing them.

Occasionally I put together a CD concert of, for example, overture, concerto and symphony.
An example might be:

Bax 'Festival Overture' (a much more interesting work than the title suggests)

Moeran: Cello Concerto

Walton: Symphony No.1

Sorry, it's a bit Anglo-Centric.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Here's an American CD concert:

Copland: An Outdoor Overture

Hanson: Piano Concerto

Diamond: Symphony No.3
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Oh...that would be a concert I'd plunk down some money for, Jeffrey. All are great works and showcase some of the great mid-20th Century American composers.

Symphonic Addict

Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 and Dvorak's Symphony No. 8. The mood of both pieces is rather carefree, so I guess this pairing should get along well.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Bliss: Overture 'Edinburgh' (I've chosen this not just because I like it but because my daughter, whose birthday it is today, is in Edinburgh for her birthday treat with her husband)  :)

Berkeley L. Concerto for Two Pianos

Moeran Symphony in G Minor
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

Aeons ago the London Philharmonic gave a series of concerts in which Bernard Haitink conducted a Beethoven symphony cycle and Vladimir Ashkenazy played all the piano concertos. I was lucky enough to get a ticket for the concert which had the Fourth Piano Concerto and the Fourth Symphony. I still remember it as an outstanding occasion.
