(Also I loved the smell of record cleaner spray when I was a kid. Again, it was a decadent, mysterious, velvet smell.)


I love the smell of rain. I particularly like the smell of subway (stations and trains) in rainy days in Tokyo. I think it's a mixture of smells of dust, mold, water, concrete, rotten things, etc.. Very urban, a little decadent smell. I wish there were a perfume of that smell.

I love the smell of the pages of a CD booklet, book or magazine.

The smell of blooming lilacs in the spring permeating the neighbourhood.

The smell of freshly chopped dill.

Probably the most controversial one: I do like the smell of gasoline.

The smell of freshly chopped dill.

This is one of the very best food smells! Also the smell of cumin.

Also right when you are starting cooking and put the onions and garlic in the pan, that very first smell that fills the room.

The smell of a leather baseball glove, soaked in neatsfoot oil, would make my list although it's an aroma I haven't experienced in a very long time.

Tomato plants are at the top of my list. I enjoy the taste of tomatoes, but not as much as the fragrance of the leaves of the plant.

Both the leaves and the glove are classic summer smells for me.

I was once in a pub with my wife when she commented on the 'lovely bonfire smell' but, in fact, she had accidentally set fire to the newspaper I was reading with a candle!
