Solitary Wanderer

I have an unexpected double booking.

On the 28th September I have this NZSO subscriber concert:

PROGRAMME
HAYDN Trumpet Concerto
GRUBER 3 MOB pieces for Solo Trumpet and Small Orchestra
MOZART Symphony No 31 Paris K297
SCHUMANN Symphony No 2

FEATURED ARTISTS
MASSIMO ZANNETTI Conductor
HÅKEN HARDENBERGER Trumpet

And I just won  :o two excellent tickets for this on the same night!

I'm thinking of doing WotW as its a one-off unique experience and giving my NZSO ticket to a family member.

My concern with WotW is the venue [new building with terrible sound I'm told] and the volume [I just can't take LOUD anymore].

What would you do? Opinions please :)

Well, personally that War of the Worlds concert would leave me depressed from the word go. Crap music from 'hell'. (or so the trailer leads me to believe). Though that's only if it's music that's confusing your choice.

I'd go for the other concert, because i can't see you missing out on anything at all. Decent programme with performers that seem that they won't let you down.

Yeah, I wouldn't normally be interested in something like this and my preference would be the NZSO but the unique, one-off nature of WotW has me curious. It could suck though...big time!

I would go with the first....just my taste Chris.  I tend to avoid shows that look like they will eventually be used as fundraisers for the upcoming Public Broadcasting fund drive here in the U.S. (see Riverdance for details ;D)

I'd go with the NZSO concert; the other looks like mere razzle-dazzle.

Dude!  You would seem not to be a "Celtic Women" fan!

And another vote for the NZSO concert, especially if volume is a concern.  (I know exactly what you mean.)  Some of these amplified events are turned up excruciatingly loud to make them more "exciting," even when ironically turning them down a notch would probably do the trick.

It also depends on whether the music appeals to you...I wasn't really convinced by the trailer.  :-\  And the NZSO program looks pretty tasty.

You might want to wait for this to be reissued on DVD, which surely it will be.

And another vote for the NZSO concert and another hearty recommendation for Mr. Hardenberger. BUT... if this is a subscription concert and you are a subscriber, don't they perform each subscription program on a few successive evenings and don't you as a subscriber have the option of trading your tickets for a different date if you really can't make up your mind/must go see both concerts?

Thanks for the comments.

I found some more clips on YouTube and its definately not my thing. Noisey [which aggravates my tinnitus] and endless bright, flashing lights [which troubles my glaucoma] and, like I've already mentioned, the new venue has atrocious acoustics so it could be a recipie for an uncomfortable evening. High volume aplified sound just makes me tense up so its very unpleasant.

The NZSO concert is a one-off and I know that will be great. They do have a Saturday night performance with the same guest soloist, but its a different programme.

I can sell the WotW tickets on-line and put the money towards some more classical music cds ;)

Bill, I'm still working through this Sinatra 30cd set which is alot of fun :)

Yeah theres a few individual titles, but I own most of it in the huge boxsets. Theres most of the Reprise era stuff that I don't have on seperate cds, but I still buy my faves in that format because the sequencing is different :P ;)

I sold the War of the World tickets for $400.00 which was pretty good as they cost me nothing!

So we're off to the NZSO tonight as originally planned  0:)

Decided the WotW would be too loud and 'flashy' and we'd just be disappointed.  :)
