One of the great Russian conductors. Superb recordings of Tsjaikovsky, Rimsky - Korsakov, Verdi, Chostakovich, Rossini Prokofiev.
Temirkanov has been a frequent guest conductor with major orchestras of Europe, Asia and the United States. In addition to his position with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, he was also music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra from 2000 to 2006. He was principal guest conductor of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor laureate of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London.

Yuri Temikanov died at the age of 84.

May God rest him in peace.

I have nothing by him in my collection. Will have to explore ...

P.S. later this morning:  ... and thanks for contributing to my OCCMDD!  :P
Saint-Saëns, who predicted to Charles Lecocq in 1901: 'That fellow Ravel seems to me to be destined for a serious future.'

Musicians I know who've performed under him thought very highly of him and his rehearsal techniques finding that he brought something original to their performances.

Roasted Swan

He must be one of the last old-school conductors who grew up/were trained under the Soviet regime.  Jarvi and Kitajenko spring to mind (I'm sure there are others I've forgotten) but this kind of first-hand experience/knowledge is all but gone now.

vers la flamme

Rest in peace to the maestro. Love his Scheherazade with the NY Philharmonic. Have not heard anything else. Any recommendations?

He recorded The Nutcracker at least twice - once with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, and once with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - any preference?

I saw him live once, he was great!

This is the film score rather than the famous Oratorio.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Let us all stay on the topic of Temirkanov.

Maestro267

Quite extraordinary in this age of job impermanence that St. Petersburg/Leningrad had exactly *two* Chief Conductors over a period spanning 84 years. Mravinsky from 1938-1988 and Temirkanov from 1988-2022. Remarkable passing of the baton.

Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2 with the RPO

EDIT: this may be a more practical coupling, if you can find it:

There's also a later recording with St. Petersburg on RCA.

Archaic Torso of Apollo

I saw him twice, with American orchestras (Chicago, Philly). Good memories of those (Prokofiev 5 & DSCH 7 respectively).

Speaking of Shostakovich, I like his DSCH cello concertos disc with Natalia Gutman, especially for the (underrated) 2nd Concerto.

I ended up listening to that one last night.  The second symphony was good but not great (I really prefer the hyper-romanticized takes like Previn).  The Vocalise was great though!  I don't know who was singing but I loved it.

At this very minute, an alarm is sounding in my city informing that Russian cruise missiles have been launched in my direction. Are you trying to tell that while I'm reading the GMG forum, I should ignore this fact?

No. We're saying that we don't want to hear about your dislike of everything Russian in every thread. We hope that you (and all the other people of Odesa) stay safe.
