Virgilio Mortari (Rho, 6 dicembre 1902 – Roma, 5 settembre 1993)


he studied piano and composition first at the Milan Conservatory, with Vincenzo Ferroni, Costante Adolfo Bossi and Ildebrando Pizzetti, then at the Parma Conservatory, where he graduated in 1928. Already in 1924 the Sonata for piano, violin and cello had brought him fruit the first prize in the competition of the Italian Society of Contemporary Music.
He was a composition teacher at the Venice Conservatory from 1933 to 1940 and from 1940 he taught at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. He was artistic director of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana from 1944 to 1946 and of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice from 1955 to 1959. In 1963 he was appointed vice-president of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.
He won the Euterpe, Marzotto and Montaigne prizes.
In 1948 he published the instrumentation manual The technique of the contemporary orchestra with Alfredo Casella
