The uncompromisingly enigmatic filmmaker, musician, and painter David Lynch has died at the age of 78. I assume there are some fans of his on here, share your Lynchian memories and favourite films and such if you're so inclined!

I greatly enjoyed my trip through Twin Peaks. And, it's uncharacteristically mainstream-ish, but Elephant Man is very touching.

A real trailblazer. Very sad to hear of his passing.

So many things I have enjoyed:

Eraserhead
The Elephant Man
Lost Highway
Mulholland Drive
Twin Peaks (all three seasons)
Fire Walk With Me

Some of his video shorts.

I remember when Twin Peaks came out (90s) being instantly infatuated. I was living with a Japanese woman at the time who also became equally obsessed and when the series finished we bought it on video and set aside evenings to binge watch it all over again. Like you I found the Elephant Man very touching, and I thought John Hurt was splendid. And Blue Velvet had a big impact too.

He was certainly the golden boy for a time. RIP

A very sad day, when one of the giants of filmmaking leaves.

Like many other people, I was astonished by Eraserhead, and it took several more viewings to "get it." Then came Blue Velvet, which I saw multiple times, and Mulholland Drive, which I only saw once (need to remedy that). Loved virtually all of his films. Still haven't seen many of his short films, nor Inland Empire, which will now need a "special event," perhaps on the big screen.

A unique, uncompromising artist.

Another victim of tobacco: he exhibited "smoker's face" in the last few decades.

Terrible news: I was always hoping for a new project, but apparently the COPD/Emphysema had weakened him quite a bit.

The Straight Story is one of our favorites!  If you have not seen it, take the time to do so!

My log has something to tell you.

I love David Lynch, from Twin Peaks to the movies and his weather reports. Here is a favorite from Lost Highway:

Twelve years ago or so, David Lynch and his son put together The Interview Project.

His son traveled rural highways into small towns (usually) and chose people at random to interview.

In under 10 minutes, the people offer tragedies and triumphs: always fascinating!

I love his films, and followed his work since the early '90s.

David Lynch was a passionate advocate for Transcendental Meditation (TM), which he practiced since the 1970s. He credited TM with enhancing his creativity, focus, and well-being, often describing it as a way to access deep calm and inner energy.

In 2005, he founded the David Lynch Foundation to promote TM in schools, for veterans with PTSD, and in underserved communities, believing it could reduce stress and foster peace. For Lynch, TM was a vital tool for unlocking the mind's full potential.

Few films have impressed me as much as "Lost Highway".

This moebius like nightmarish journey into the unconcious.

What I appreciate most in Lynch is how the border between fantasy and dream on the one hand, and the real on the other,  is so porous.

The ones I don't much like are Inland Empire (self indulgent) and The Straight Story (too normal.) I have lots of reservations about Twin Peaks Series 3, despite the undeniable excellence of things like Gotta Light?

My own favourite place in the Lynch psychogeography is Club Silencio

[..]

Is there really such a border if we carefully and unconditionally examine what we consider real?

I'm more inclined to see that one person's real is another's fantasy, and vice versa. Even within the same head, the distinction is quite conditional.

I also love Mulholland Drive.

Few people realize that David Lynch inserted a Public Service Announcement about Safe Driving-Tailgating in the middle of Lost Highway;)
