Vassily Kalinnikov --- get his 2 superb symphonies on 1 CD and that's it. I am not aware of any other works of him recorded.

Juan Crisostomo Arriaga --- get his 3 amazing SQ on 1 CD and that's it. Same commentary.

You are missing Arriaga's symphony, which is indeed an interesting work. Add 1 CD to your compilation. ;)

I edited my message to be more politically correct. Sorry.

Hard to say whos music is worth one CD only.
If I like a composer I want more than just one CD.
If I don't like I don't want even one CD.
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Thank you;  but profanity is a question of manners and tone, Poju, not of "political correctitude."  Would you use the Finnish equivalent of those foul words in the presence of your grandmother?  And if not, is it because of "political correctitude"?

He said he's sorry. What do you want out of the poor guy?

My grandmother is not alive anymore and when she was I never heard her say anything negative about Elgar. You all know I am having hard time in my life so why piss me off? To test my nerves?

If you're going to be on the Internet, you're going to have to develop a tougher skin. Otherwise, you'll always be at the mercy of trollish behavior.

I do not think the litmus test here is what is suitable for some putative grandmother. Robustness is a frequently displayed characteristic and frankly, I for one would not be wanting to read yards of the milksop prose my grandmother would have found acceptable. You made your point Karl, but the overtime payments for the bad-language police have been pared down to deal only with the most egregious.

Would you had met your dearest foe in heaven
Or ever your grandma had read that milksop prose . . . .

I know. I have developped that tougher skin but I am constantly surprised I need it here too. In fact, this is among the toughest forums I know. I keep making the mistake thinking this is a friendly forum with other Elgar fans so I often come here without the thicker skin.  :-\ When do I learn?

I think it's just the same handful of troublemakers who like to mix it up with you. Just IGNORE them. IGNORE!!!

As a matter of fact, Marco Polo has a disc which may or may not be out of print containing several orchestral suites from his stage/opera writing. I am happy to listen via naxos.com though, and leave the CD unbought.
Quote from: canninator on September 18, 2007, 08:04:16 AMYou can pretty much fit all of Villa-Lobos solo guitar on one CD anyway.
And Norbert Kraft has done it in wonderful style. :)

Perhaps I am an oddity, but I own two Silvius Leopold Weiss lute discs and will be happy to hear more!

But the one disc of Villa-Lobos guitar music is not all that you want of that composer, or is it?

Certainly not!

Unfortunately it is at present all I have - but that is a problem.

Bachianas Brasileiras 1-9 are essential Villa-Lobos. I have Batiz on EMI but I think the new discs on BIS are considered the best versions of these works. Also, Choros No. 11 (Ralf Gothoni/Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra/Sakari Oramo/Ondine) kicks ass!  0:)

You will be converted.  Run, do not walk, to acquire this:

I have one of the separate discs included in this set, with the Symphonia Serena and Harmonie der Welt, both of which fail to do it for me despite repeated listenings.

If (as I hope) you have not quite closed the book on those pieces (let alone on Hindemith as an artist), this two-disc set is a steal at a budget price:

I think the composer on the podium does even Blomstedt one or two better on the Symphonia serena.  In any event, if you do not yet know the Konzertmusik for strings and brass, Opus 50, that is a piece you must hear before presuming to pass lasting judgment upon him.
