Hindemith. His Mathis der Maler symphony is one of my very favorite classical works, but the other pieces I've heard from him either bore or annoy me (because of his glaring stylistic quirks).

Re: Hovhaness, I'd say he's a 2- or 3-disc composer :)

You will be converted.  Run, do not walk, to acquire this:

One man's "glaring stylistic quirks" is another man's musical character.

I find Hindemith to be at least a 15-disc-er :-)

[re. Hovhaness] I only have the Cello Concerto and Symphony No. 22 'City Of Light'. Not worth buying more, then?
His "Mysterious Mountain" symphony is well worth having.  If I were paring my collection, it's the one I'd keep.

No one's mentioned Holst?

That's because there's more to Holst than The Planets. ;D

Segismund Thalberg. Listen to one of his pieces;any piece.
And you'll appreciate the real genius of Liszt

Vassily Kalinnikov --- get his 2 superb symphonies on 1 CD and that's it. I am not aware of any other works of him recorded.

Juan Crisostomo Arriaga --- get his 3 amazing SQ on 1 CD and that's it. Same commentary.

Somehow, one of Elgar's marches slipped into my CD collection (it's only 4 minutes, thankfully) ......... otherwise .........

That really makes you able to estimate Elgar's significance as a composer, doesn't it?

and less tiresome in headphone listening.

John Cage!

Okay, okay, four minutes thirty-three seconds.  ;D

This forum is not for me. People do not value my insight in music so - - -  you.

You can't expect everyone to like the same thing :)

Unless you play Classical Guitar you will only ever need one CD of Fernando Sor and Napoleon Coste. This is probably also true of Ponce, Brouwer, Barrios, and Rodriguez. You can pretty much fit all of Villa-Lobos solo guitar on one CD anyway. Unless you are a real lute buff you can probably get away with a single Leopold Weiss CD and a single Dowland disc would probably suit most people (if you have no taste, of course).

No I can't. I feel nobody likes the same thing. It's not nice to realise you are alone in the world admiring Elgar.
Even less nice is when people intentionally try to piss me off. I don't need that shit. I really don't need.

Well, I like Elgar (especially the 3 late chamber pieces and string serenade), and I also am not very pleased with the way that any discussion of him on this forum is sabotaged, but making an issue out of it will just feed the fire.

I really don't need the crude language you spew forth on the forum just because you're unhappy.

Tell you what, Poju: next time you are enraged, step away from your computer and go for a nice walk for ten minutes.  Resist the urge to childishly display your displeasure by lapsing into profanities in English.

Give us a reason to have some respect for you, fella;  because your readiness to use four-letter words isn't as impressive as you seem to think  ::)

Nonsense, various members have said they like Elgar; though I think it will be some time before the membership here can get down to a sensible discussion about him, basically that is down to your type of advocacy.

You are claiming some kind of exclusivity in the face of contrary facts. You remind me of a certain character in the comedy series, 'Little Britain'

You're not. But there are real risks associated with admiring Elgar:

True. If you lapse into profanities in Finnish, on the other hand, nobody will have the slightest idea what you're talking about.

Almost no one, I think we have two other Finnish posters. This is another sense in which he is not alone.
