Add USSR State SO / Svetlanov to the bunch.
This is Melodiya's current release:

Unfortunately that page doesn't have samples but the one with previous release does - click on Preview/Прослушать and should be able to listen to whole Act I online (maybe even the whole ballet).

Yes! Although strangely, I'm also one of those few people (given how Iago generally represents a minority ;) :P) who enjoyed Ozawa's effort, but I don't think I've heard a more satisfying, breathtaking complete Swan Lake than that Soviet one. 8)

Hi folks,

I'd like a complete CD set of Sleeping Beauty. Comments on Dorati/RCOA, Rozhdestvensky/BBCSO, Previn/LSO, Bonynge/NPO and Pletnev/RNO are especially welcome. Which is the once recording that I should have?

Thanks, MR

My choice: Dorati/RCOA

Though it says complete, I believe someone here pointed out in the past that it may be missing a "smidge".  Plus, you cannot beat the price for two discs.

I was steered toward the same Dorati/RCO recording and have never since felt the need for another.

Hi - I'd like to know which version you guys deem the "best" for Sleeping Beauty (Tchaikovsky). I heard that the RCOA/Dorati is one of the tops. Any comments please?

Thanks. MR

Yes, thats the one I have via a recommendation from the Rough Guide to Classical Music.

I listened to it many times prior to a SB performance a few months ago. It was a delight; magnificently coherent!

This might be why you're getting so few responses here.

Anyone can comment about the Pletnev/RNO Penguin Rosette version please?

Thanks Bogey & DavidRoss.

I would go for Dorati/RCOA (edit: not the 1st choice if I could decide, because there is not always the level of spontaneous emotions driven by Russian conductors). However, you would may also try Gergiev/Kirov Orch. and Svetlanov/Russian State SO.

Pletnev's Sleeping Beauty is -in my opinion- average performance to Act 3. From Act 3 the brisk tempos are really ideal for that short dances. But overall impression goes for 3.5/5, if I have to vote. The brass section is often restrained where the music demands more engagement (for example Act 1 - Pas d'action - try to compare it with Dorati/RCOA or Svetlanov  :o). However I like the tempos which are very vivid and sound fresh.

For Sleeping Beauty excellent recordings I like: Dorati/RCOA (not the 1st choice if I could decide, because there is not always the level of spontaneous emotions driven by Russian conductors), Svetlanov/Russian State SO and want to hear Gergiev/Kirov Orchestra.

Say, is this thread in Opera & Vocal because of the textless children's chorus in Nutcracker8)

DavidRoss

IIRC, a couple of years ago someone (Lis?) thought it would be a good idea to also put ballet in this subforum.  Yet we still have half a dozen Wagner threads cluttering up the general music one...go figure!

Daphnis et Chloé has a chorus as well but it is usually cut, starting from Diaghilev. Maybe there were/are simply too many people to pay besides orchestra and dancers.

Thanks guys for your responses. The earlier thread shows many comments about Swan Lake & Nutcracker but less on S-Beauty. Comments on Russian conductors/orch welcome for S-Beauty. Thanks.

Gramophone has Andrew Mogrelia's Naxos version as the best, incredibly, but I would not recommend it, on basis of the unlistenable acoustics Naxos gives to their bargain-quality Slovak orchestra.

I have this version. The recording quality is not ideal, that is true. Maybe not the best Sleeping Beauty, but the balletic approach taken by Mogrelia is perfect for ballet dancers. The performance is uplifting and imaginative. The biggest problem for me is the very restrained brass section.

By the way I live in the town of the orchestra (Kosice) and attend their concerts.
