You prefer to listen to much different music, I want to get to know the music I love thoroughly. So we are at opposite ends of a spectrum which is probably entirely normal.

That's probably right: I want to listen to the music I like, you want to know the music you like.

But having multiple recordings of the same piece serves both ends, and I too have multiple recordings of the same piece (for instance, I have about 13 sets of Chopin's complete piano music). It's just that I feel that adding new recordings of a piece while never having listened to all the ones I already have is somehow not right (to keep the previous instance, I have listened to only one of those 13 in its entirety and I'm currently in the process of listening to a second).

So we are not that different at all.  :)

But one more time: The reason why I purchase more recordings than I can manage to listen to at the same time is that I can't wait to purchase the CDs until they are OOP.

You just don't look mentally ill because your neurotically oversized music collection is on a micro-SD card instead of filling up your living space!

But it is okay, I'm sure you made up for it with endless stacks of books! ;D

Two walls from end to end and from ceiling to the floor, to be precise.

As for my music collection, it fills 3 external hard disks and 4 internal laptop hard disks. If I go on like that, I'll need another external hard disk very soon.

Absolutely.

That's a reasonable reason.  :)

Quote from: Mister Sharpe on August 23, 2025, 09:24:14 AMA topic worthy, I think, of discussion.  My Granny would say this is a case of having bigger eyes than a stomach, and often it doesn't present that great a problem, but I have read of alleged classical music fans who might be better described as hoarders.  I'm thinking of one in particular who filled up his house and his two-car garage (!) with CDs, still shrink-wrapped classical CDs
:o And who is/was that?

I used to listen to them all but just in the last year or so have acquired a few bargain box sets, downloads and charity shop CDs and have a bit of a backlog. For classical music though I'd just rather load it all into my music player and mostly let it pick works at random.

Mine would fill 10 Terabyte, and including two safety copies 30 Terabyte, so I have since long given up to rip all the CDs..

Holy snikes!

I doubt I will ever approach a tb for all my music. :o

Mmm... Best not to mention just how many terabytes my archive runs to... The Grateful Dead recordings alone are edging towards a full terabyte. In my defence, I hardly ever dip into the files as more than 99 percent of what I actually listen to these days comes straight from streaming. Which suits me perfectly well, really.

I think on this forum I might not even be a serious collector. Even if I add in all of my video games, I am only approach half a tb (plus ALL my music - not just classical), lol.

A mere 180 Gb on my music player for my classical plus a little 1970s Tangerine Dream.

I will also add that I own pretty much no classical cds - I gave my entire collection away to a friend as a wedding present. :) (well worth it, in my opinion; also, I used to own a revolver, gave that away to another friend as a wedding present, lol)

Not a shotgun wedding then ;) .

Lol, not supplied by me - he was a gun aficionado, and I, at times, buy things impulsively (for instance, I have like 7 books coming to my house that I no longer want, but, being an academic, books are the easiest thing for me to get rid of).

I have listen to all my CD's several times, there is no CD in my collection that I did not listen to.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"
