Last Friday, in an imaginative opening to their season, François-Xavier Roth and the SWR Symphonieorchester began with Les Élémens, simphonie nouvelle by Jean-Féry Rebel. The composer is probably well known to Baroque lovers here, but I had never heard any of his works. In addition to the strikingly dissonant opening, I loved the fifth sequence, "Rossignols," featuring one of the percussionists doing a beautiful job with a water whistle.
"I set down a beautiful chord on paper—and suddenly it rusts."
—Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998)
