Yes, you can post pics of your car (and the one you really want to own), but I'm personally more interested to hear which type of transmission you prefer.

I'm a committed automatic fan. I just don't understand why, in our otherwise highly automated age, people buy an expensive item like a car and choose to give themselves work to do beyond turning the wheel, pushing the acelerator/brake and trying not to hit others on our increasingly congested and chaotic roads. ;D

What's your preference, and why?

George

Automatic.

Why?

Because a nice 6 cylinder these days gives me more than enough pickup.

What?

We rent this from Zipcar when we need one.  :)

Solitary Wanderer

I've driven automatics exclusively for 15 years now. Its more practical around town.

At the moment I have a Toyota Curren 1996.

But I need to get a station wagon soon  :)

The last automatic transmission that I owned was my first car: a 1965 Ford Thunderbird that I bought in 1970 with the earnings from my first job. My current:

Stick shift of course! Had to use an automatic once, rental, and it had one pedal missing, the one on the far left to be used by my left foot. Sloppy workmanship!  ;D

Why my choice? I want to drive my car, not be driven by it!  ;)

Bravo, Uffe! Couldn't agree more. When I travel, I have to rent a car and it's always an automatic, of course. Never have an enjoyable driving experience in one... :-\

Automatic, because that's what I've always driven.

And it *is* silver, because silver never looks too dirty and if someone keys your car, you're not able to tell as much.  0:) All my cars shall be silver.

Indeed, silver IS the color to have. My previous 2 were silver, so this time I decided to go with a lovely blue/green color. In sunlight it appears green, on overcast days it looks blue. But it always looks dirty, even when I get home from the car wash, because even a light layer of dust looks like heavy crud. Next time, it'll be back to a dirt color... ;)

Right on, Lis!  Plus more fun, better mileage, fewer maintenance issues, and how the hell are you supposed to heel-and-toe with a damned automatic, anyway?

Stick shift - one of the best things was the ease with which one could rock himself out of a snowbank in wintertime.  The automatics could never rock as well.  We live in northern Michigan.

When our children were learning to drive, hubby and I deliberately bought a stick shift.  There were a lot of moans and groans but we told them if they learned to drive a stick, that they would then be able to drive any car.  Years later each one of them thanked us for making them drive the stick.

And automatic. I don't know how to drive stick and have neither the desire or need to learn.

This is my automatic:

Though I have a manual stick shift Ford as well, and I couldn't care less....different systems have different advantages, depends on your use of the vehicle.

Although I prefer a standard transmission, I now drive an automatic. I never again want to be stuck in an Autobahn "Stau" with that hellish stop and go traffic lasting hours (sometimes the entire day!) with a standard transmission. This is my Mitsubishi Sigma (Diamante in the States):

Well, in about two days' time (my wife is being induced tomorrow evening ;)) we'll have a family ... but I don't think our car looks like a typical family 4-door:

No, it looks more like a getaway car.  ;D
