How do you talk to shy people? Or better, what do you talk about when you have nothing to say? I chatted yesterday with a penpal friend of mine and she was so shy just to talk, she had giggle attacks (i used to get those and they really suck). Anyways, I thought I was being funny because she kept giggling but it was her being shy and then I ran out of stuff to say...so I started talking about the uncomfortable silence...I have tons of these moments because most of what I say to other people is me making fun of what they said (which is why im so loveable) but if they don't talk I can't do this. So i guess what I'm really asking is, what do you people talk about with each other? lol..Also, any tips for talking to shy people?

Woops...how did this end up here? Sorry Mr. Moderator.

No problem at all, HH, moved it to a suitable location.

I'd say: don't openly acknowledge that they're shy, ask them questions that leave openings for them to talk about themselves (almost everyone loves to do that), and show genuine interest in what they're saying--really listen. And don't be afraid of silence. It needn't be awkward.

Make them feel comfortable/safe with your words. When you have earned their trust you can talk about anything. People are shy because they are unsure of themselves.
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

"giggle attacks", hm, didn't know they had a name. i get that, but just when i think of something funny and just keep thinking about it and can't stop laughing.
but i think i know what you're talking about

My grandfather, who's 90 tends to giggle and laught a lot.  Why?  because he doesn't understand what's going on, and it's his way to cover up.  Ever do that?  Somebody says something and you dont hear/understand what they said and you just laugh to acknowledge what was said?

Kullervo

Borrow the book Overcoming Shyness from your local library.

yeah, i used to sit with this one Chinese kid at lunch, he talked a bit quiet and was sometimes hard to understand- and the lunchroom was loud. Half the time i'd just nod, not really understanding what he said or hearing him... A few times he'd bring his friends (or people in his family maybe?) and they'd just speak Chinese to each other the whole lunch, totally ignoring me. that wasn't very fun...  :P

Yeah of course, the few times I have gone to a night club, the music is just so loud that I can't hear anything. And I have no idea how to read peoples lips. Here is a conversation I've probably had to many times.

"So whats your name?"
"what?"
"what is your name??"
"huh what?"
*screaming in my ear* "what is your name!!!!!!?"
"ohh yeah hehe" *turns around and walks away.

Be assertive, loud and right up to their faces.  They will either shrink or meet the challenge.

If Sean ever returns we can ask him how to sleep with a shy girl.

Rephrase: If Sean ever returns we can ask him how to sleep with a shy teenage girl from Asia.

If memory serves, I think the girl he was referring to was Italian.

Why is it that I can remember utterly worthless dross like this?

I have trouble memorizing the atomic weight of uranium (Atomic Weight: 238.029(3)) but for some reason I can remember exact conversations from tv shows I have watched once 10 years ago :D

Anyways...I doubt this girl will ever talk to me again. Well she was fine typing, but she just couldn't speak without giggling after everything. I think I could date a person like that, at least it would make me feel funny.  Probably in the top 10 shy people I have ever meet.

Excuses... we should assume she wasn't hot enough.
