This was originally going to be a PM to Drasko, but since there might well be more people interested in this piece of news, I'm posting it here. :)

I went to my favourite source of new classical music today, here in Athens, and asked about Mitropoulos recordings apart from the Orfeo ones, and that poor excuse of a CD with only four Skalkottas dances:

As it turns out, this disc is on the way to being reissued, or at least made available to customers of that particular record shop. (It's the same one where I bought "The Art of Dimitri Mitropoulos", also on Sony Classical.)

So if you're interested, keep a lookout for updates to this topic! It might or might not be available outside Greece, but either way, I'll let you know as soon as I know more. ;)

(Semi-relevant footnote: They also got me the Karajan/BPO Alpinesinfonie DVD! ;D)

Yes, that's also part of "The Art of Dimitri Mitropoulos", which I recently bought and which began this Mitropoulos discussion, in the first place. ;)

I've unfortunately very little by Mitropoulos, but nonetheless a recommendation to make.

This relatively unknown Don Giovanni is a real stunner: in an on-the-edge-of-your-seat kind of way.
Superb singers. For a old fashioned non-HIP performance, my first choice of available live recordings, the historical performance conducted by Bruno Walter from 1942 being hors concours.
The modest interest amongst collectors has an advantage: there are still copies around for a nice price. :)

I was having a browse on amazon looking for Renfield's 'Art of Mitropoulos,' which I now realise is OOP. But I came across this:

CD1:
BORODIN Polovtsian Dances 1/12/1952
IPPOLITOV-IVANOV Caucasian Sketches - Suite No.1, Op 10 20/3/1953
KHATCHATURIAN Piano Concerto Oscar Levant (piano) 1/1/1950

CD2:
MENDELSSOHN The Hebrides, Ruy Blas 2/11/1953
BRAHMS Variations on a theme by Joseph Haydn, Op. 56a 4/4/1942
TCHAIKOVSKY Suite for Orchestra No. 1 Op. 43 18/10 & 17/11/1954

CD3:
SAINT-SAËNS Danse Macabre, Op. 40 27/11/1950,
Le Rouet d'Omphale,Op. 31 23/1/1950
KODÁLY Hary Janos - Suite for Orchestra 27/2/1956
DE FALLA The Three-Cornered Hat - Suite No. 2 2/11/1953
SCRIABIN Symphony No. 5 Op. 60 Leonid Hambro (piano) 20/3/1953

Does anyone have this set? I can't seem to find any information on it, but at a ridiculously low price of £2.49, I ordered a copy anyway. (This is a reliable marketplace seller, from past experience anyway).

There is another (new) copy from another seller at the same price, if anyone is interested. I notice that they only do UK deliveries though, so if an oversea-er wants it, just pm me and I'll order it for you if you like.

Here is the link.
Durch alle Töne tönet
Im bunten Erdentraum
Ein leiser Ton gezogen
Für den der heimlich lauschet.

same with his Wozzeck. That was his style I think, like Kondrashin.

This one I almost bought from the same store I mention above, a while ago...

Instead, however, I opted for the Budapest Quartet's Complete Beethoven SQs and Walter's NYPO Brahms cycle, on the same label. And by the time my pool of money to spend on classical had "recovered" from that purchase, it was already gone. Still, curious repertory in there, isn't it? :o

Also, Que, I'll keep that Don Giovanni in mind! Thank you. :)
