John (M.I.) - forever Koechlin

I can certainly understand this because I think Koechlin's picture is the longest running avatar I had on GMG. Could I be wrong here? I do know that my "Koechlin phase" was well-documented.

Because I just found it odd, and I didn't even remember first that I did have that slight Bartók craze last year. People can have discussions without feeling negative about something, you know...
Anyway, Bartók is definitely in my top 15.

Don't feel bad I'm forever associated with Koechlin. :D By the way, Koechlin isn't even in my top 25.

You know what, Karlo, you're right. You did express praise for Bartok's music but not the over-the-top praise I thought I remembered you giving him, so let's take Bartok off your list and insert Ravel instead. :)

So, now yours will look like...

Karlo (North Star) - Janacek, Ravel, Sibelius

I'm glad I made you see sense  ;)
Divertimento for string orchestra, Sz. 113 is one fantastic piece, though  :)

Well, I don't agree with the Koechlin tag Greg has associated with me. I hardly ever listen to his music anymore. I've been listening to Delius since I started seriously listening to classical music four years ago. I had a Koechlin phase, but I've been in a Delius phase since the beginning. The same with my other top five composers.

Yes, Divertimento is a fine work. Probably one of the most intense works for string orchestra that I know with exception of Schoenberg's Verklarte Nacht. I mean that's truly an epic work all the way across the board.

My reasons for picking Koechlin is because that was your avatar when i joined GMG.

John: Delius
Harry: Tchaikovsky (No, I know not his favorite, but one day Kimi saw Tchaikovsky's portrait and said: Uncle Harry!)
Karl: Wuorinen

I pick R. Strauss for you, Paul. I remember when I was getting into his operas, you had some pretty firm recommendations for me and you seemed like you were quite passionate about his music.

So here's a recap:

Paul - R. Strauss, Mahler (because Kimi and Vanessa said so!)
Monkey Greg - Britten, R. Strauss, Elgar, Bach, Dowland (I just added this one :))
Karlo - Janacek, Bartok Ravel (:)), Sibelius
Karl - Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Haydn
Gurn - Haydn
Daniel (Madaboutmahler) - Mahler, R. Strauss, Elgar
Ilaria - Wagner, Liszt, Beethoven, The Strauss Family
Ray - Brahms, Shostakovich, Beethoven, Penderecki
Sarge - Mahler, Bruckner, RVW, Wagner
Brian - Dvorak, Janacek, Beethoven, Sibelius
Anime Greg - Mahler, Xenakis
Johan - Brian, Delius
Colin - RVW, Rubbra, Brian

I have too many but Mahler, Bach and Feldman probably goes into the top three. Cage has moved into the top ... uh... 15, maybe even 10.

Feldman. He's quite interesting. Only own Rothko Chapel. I can't really connect to his idiom, but I'll admit I enjoyed this work.

Thanks for this, Henk. I can't say I'm familiar with Donatoni or Aperghis. Do you think I would enjoy their music based on what you know I like?

Well you like Varese, so give them a try. It really is outstanding music if you like it or not.

flyingdutchman

I associate myself mostly with

Dvorak
Tchaikovsky

Most would know that who came from Classical Insites, and especially the Tchaikovsky 5

Really? REALLY??? After months and months of bullying people into buying and listening to Koechlin, now he isn't even in your top 25? You're right, John, you are one sick puppy!  ;D

Quote from: Mirror Image on May 30, 2011, 08:26:05 AMPeople don't need to analyze it to death. It is music that one simply lets wash over them. Music they can escape with. Not many composers have left me with this kind of feeling, which is why Koechlin has become one of my absolute favorite composers. It took a year or so to come back to his music and I'm glad I did. Now, I'm just one sick puppy. :)

WTF?! >:( You even had Santa avatar for Christmas! (Albeit for a short while.)

Thread duty:

Well, someone has to account for this omission...

Ray - Bruckner... and then, of course, the others mentioned.
