The symphony version of this thread has proved a surprise 'hit' with folks here, so now let's try something different again. You have to list your top ten (the numering is less important this time ;)) favourite concerti ... but you can choose each solo instrument only ONCE.

Let me illustrate with my list:

1 ) Finzi - Cello Concerto

2 ) Tchaikovsky - Piano Concerto No. 1

3 ) Sibelius - Violin Concerto

4 ) Marcello - Oboe Concerto in D Minor

5 ) Ibert - Flute Concerto

6 ) Golland - Tuba Concerto

7 ) Finzi - Clarinet Concerto

8 ) Rodrigo - Concierto de Aranjuez (Guitar, of course :D)

9 ) Danzi - Bassoon Concerto in G Minor

10 ) Vivaldi - Mandolin Concerto (RV 425)

Bit trickier this one. ;)

You know what? I love symphonies, I love opera, and I love string quartets, but I have never, ever gotten into concertos.  Perhaps this thread will inspire...

Mark, for someone of my own listening tastes, this is downright hardcore. :o

One of my favourite concertos is the Devienne Bassoon concerto, with Hubner.  Something I wouldn't usually buy and was fortunate to win this on ahem...Classic FM years ago.  As big a boned Baroqueness as you wouldn't expect, a fascinating concerto. It came as a bit of a shock to hear such lovely music for bassoon.

Bacarisse, a concertino full of beautiful music for Guitar, not quite an Aranjuez but nonetheless evoking everything Espana IMO.

Too much of a good thing for piano/violin  ;D
