I just got Opus Arte newsletter and they announced that they're going to release a new Tristan & Isolde DVD from Glyndebourne with Stemme and Gambill, is this going to be the T&I DVD to buy?:

Just reading the cast list makes me look forward to that one! Of course Nina Stemme is already known and critics are agreed on her being the best Isolde ever! With René Pape in the role he took possession of some time ago, König Marke we can't go wrong. I know I have heard Gambill before but can't think of the role right now. - Too many senior moments. - T.C. where are you, oh you, my memory jogger? -

The one who gets this recording first has to report on it, please! It's usually you Brits you get it before we Yanks do. BTW. my bank has started charging me for the foreign currency exchange which might make me think twice before ordering from MDT et al.

The Opus Arte web site announces the release date as January 1, 2008! A long wait ahead of us!  :'(

The photos make that production look exciting. As good as the music is, I have no interest in watching a Tristan with leads like this:

It would pretty much break the illusion of romance completely...

Until now I've been sticking with Böhm's CDs, but it finally looks like there's a DVD I may be able to watch :)

Thank you for making my day(/night), just when I was going to bed. Politically incorrect though it might be, I had a "solid" laugh! :P

Robert Gambill is the Sigmund in the Stuttgart Ring...

Here we go again with another Tristan und Isolde from Opus Arte, this is my favorite opera and yet all the DVD productions on the market thus far leave a lot to be desired.  Remember this from Opus Arte:

very uninspiring to say the least.  I hope this second release from Opus Arte is an improvement.  If anybody here gets a chance to see it please, please write a review.

  Thank You,,

Lethe, Bohms' CD with Birgit Nilsson (one that I have not heard) has quite a reputation, some people consider it the ideal CD recording, its a live performance if I am not mistaken? However have you heard Furtwangler's studio recording with Kristen Flagstad on EMI Great Recordings of the Century??

The Böhm is pretty amazing - bullet-proof, really. The singing is as good as can be expected from those names, the conducting swift and velvety dark, and the recording quality is almost remarkable for the time. Total hyperbole, but I love it :P

I haven't heard Furtwängler in any opera yet (although I have a DG DVD of Don Giovanni on my to watch pile) - I generally get scared off by the potential (lack of) sound quality.

It is unfair to blame Opus Arte for a production you are not too fond of! If I am correct, the picture posted is of the Stuttgart Ring, one I had bought, watched once, and then sold it on my amazon Marketplace account. It sat there a long time too until I found a courageous buyer!

Opus Arte only produces the discs, not the performance.  ;)

Lis I am a little confused here by that comment, are you refering to the Opus Arte picture I posted. Thats the Tristan und Isolde not the Ring I was refering to with the Symphony Orchestra and chorus of the Gran Teatre del Liceu.  Please ignore this comment if I am mistaken. You are right, I should not blame Opus Arte for a performance they put out that I did not like (as you say they do not produce performances  ;))

Marvin, you are entitled to be confused and I can justify my confusion because I wrote the post barely a few minutes after getting out of bed. Should shower and eat before opening my mouth - or activating my fingers! Forgive!  :-[

I think one critic described the two leads in this production as resembling two zeppelins competing for the same mooring.

I saw this Met production on PBS, and assume that it is the same version on this DVD.  If you can suspend disbelief over the two leads (and they do sound great), the production itself is fascinating.  The scene below is from the last act.

Here are four reviews, from Heppner's website.

I can suspend my disbelief but those people need to suspend their eating habits. I mean, that's just totally disgraceful.

As for the topic of this thread, i only need to know one thing: Eurotrash, yes or no?

uffeviking

Pointing out to you, Sir: There is no such accredited designation describing certain performances, directions, of a theatre performance with the word 'Eurotrash'. It is a word created by narrow-minded audience members in the USA, much to the amusement of Europeans, intelligent and open to new interpretations of operas, et al.  8)

I challenge anyone who has seen the Salzburg production of Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail release on the M|22 series to deny the existence of Eurotrash.

I currently have this in my Amazon shopping cart.  Am I to assume from the lack of anyone referencing it here that it's not good?

Hi gmstudio, I enquired about the recording you are refering to in this thread:

you might want to take a look at the response I got.  By the way you will have to scroll down a bit to see my post and the responses to it.
