I guess the obvious pro would be to have no gaps for mp3 players that do not have this feature (such as joining the final two movements of Beethoven's op131 makes sense that way), the downside is it will be hard to switch to separate tracks when (and if )you want to.

Yeah. That pretty much sums up the pros and cons.

It's a neat little iTunes feature but I guess I'll pass. At least I know it's there now. Thanks, guys.

I thought of another use: If you want to shuffle your iPod, your movements won't get scrambled.

Did a major cull yesterday in my efforts to get rid of clutter (and my upcoming move). I sold over 200 CDs off my classical collection (after conveniently ripping them of course  >:D), most were those that I had not listened to for over a year. When I brought them over to the store I was thinking that I would feel bad about it, but as they inspected the CDs one by one, I realized the only thing I was feeling was relief  :D Now I am thinking... why not sell them all ?  $:)

Next up: Doing the same thing for non-classical CDs. There is a website which offered quite a good price after I sent them the barcodes of the ones I have in mind for selling. But I don't know how much I can trust them, since they will do an inspection upon receiving and they may send the ones they find inferior back to me, charging me for the shipping  ::) they get to keep them if I don't pay

OH orbital  I just don't have your will power, nor drive nor common sense to cull!  In my whole CD collecting years thus far  I have sold off only 15 CDs and 2 DVDs. I have been consumed with guilt, separation anxiety and that ever pestering voice in my head that says "Did I really need to do that!".  Sure I have about 500 CDs in total and there are quite a few that I can think of off the top of my head that deserve  $:) "to get the ax" so to speak but I just can't do it!  I hope you were able to get a good price for them!!

About $3 - $4 a CD on average. They were all available stuff though (no Naxos, they would not pay more than $1 for each).

Actually I accidentally had one OOP CD (The second volume of the Alkan-Smith on EMI) with me. There was a small scratch on it, and I realized my error only when they put it on the rejected bin  :)

It's not that I needed to do it, but I find the idea of CDs more and more annoying. They occupy a lot of space and lossless (or 320kps) rips are just as good, better organized, easily accessible. I have pretty much stopped buying them in 2008 anyway. Also, I am switching continents for a while and the thought of all those CDs being shipped, stored, re-organized, set and then returned back here was overwhelming.

I hope you a have a smooth hassle-free move  :).  Yes I agree with you, carry loads of CDs across continents is not advisable.

This doesn't mean that the CD's can't stay put in a continent of your choice and wait for you there while their ripped contents follow you around the globe...  8)

Are you offering to babysit them?  ;D

CDsit them, rather! :P

I'll be facing the same problem soon, myself, and I might just ship the CD cases to my parents', simply keeping with me the discs in their durable (and compact) travelling-cases, along with the hard drives. :)

My good man, to me, my CDs are my babies.

Perhaps to you they are just CDs.  ;D

The future of my collection is for moderate growth hampered only by infrequent dips into a recession.

Well I'd say your collection is in better shape than the housing market!

The thing is I don't need them anymore, I don't want them waiting for me when I come back. I want them gone  >:D

To me they are just CDs. I never took good care of them, they are just... things for me. What they contain is very important of course, and I could not live without it. Now that there is a way to just keep the essence and throw the extra baggage seemed very appealing.

Of course I was (Half) kidding. Music is my life, CDs are my hobby. The idea of importing 3000 plus CDs onto a computer makes me nervous, though I can see the appeal, I don't have the patience or willingness. I'd need to do WAV anyway, since I no longer can listen to MP3's at home, so I'd need a shitload of memory. Plus I'd have to buy a computer. I'd rather spend all that money on CDs and all that time listening to them.

That's because I won't be acquiring any sub-prime loans. :D

I was not specifically referring to my continent, although after reading orbital's explanatory post...

...I'm sure a mutually beneficial arrangement could be made. And, since he lives so close, it would be rude not to invite Renfield to participate in the plund... purging/safekeeping process.  :P

I would gladly agree to make such a sacrifice, for a cause so noble. 0:)

For the remainder of this year:

Start expanding my "historical" recordings....Pearl label preferred in most cases.
Sure up jazz collection.
Complete my Rolling Stones run.
Continue to fill in my Beethoven catalogue.
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

I feel the same way, but I think I'm going to have to start moving them onto a hard drive with back-up dvds.  They are just growing too numerous to keep track of!  Also, when I think of the amount of music I can put on a blu-ray dvd in uncompressed format, my mouth waters.  yummy!  I'd love to have all the Beethoven string quartets or Mahler's symphonies on one dvd; wouldn't anyone?!  Hours and hours of listening pleasure without getting up to change the cd -- aural nirvana!

I will probably keep my SACDs and transfer all the conventional cds to a hard drive in some loss-less format for the sake of convenience.  The backups will be there in case the hard-drive crashes.  I also think seriously about the Olive system -- now they have the Opus 4 which has a terrabyte hd, room for 3000 cds!  Moreover, for a price they will rip the cds for you, which is a great relief. It also supports HD audio playback with 96khz/24-bit technology, so that makes the purchase of studio quality downloads ( such as those offered by Linn) extremely attractive.

Unfortunately the cd is going to be obsolete in my lifetime, so it's only a matter of time before there is no alternative to musical downloads.  Hopefully by then most downloads will not compromise on sound quality.
