I recently acquired Chailly's set to complete my Mahler symphonies, I needed no. 7-8-9-10. but i noticed in the symphonies i know that i prefer my stand-alone recordings especially in no 2 and 5. Chailly seems to me  a bit reserved to deliver the fullest aspect of Mahler music...

I don't know the 8th well enough to comment on it, but I think the 3rd and 7th are superb performances and the 5th is pretty darn good too. For me, only the 6th is a turkey. Most of the others rank in the good-but-not-great category.

However, I'd gladly have paid the cheap price just for his 3rd and 7th, so I'm happy with it.

I have 3, 8 and 9. 3 is stupendous, probably as good as it gets. 9 is very good, not quite on the same level as 3. 8 is not a work I really like so I won't comment.

His 3 is good, though Nagano's is my top pick from the past thirty plus years.

Lethevich

(I voted for 10 instead of 9 by accident - fail!)

The 5 and 9 in this set are recordings of these pieces that I often return to. I guess based on the comments so far that if I make a major effort to finally get into the 3rd, this set's recording would be a good choice.

I particularly like his 10 (much more than Rattle but not more so than Barshai), 9, 5 and 3. I have the whole cycle as individual issues; the fillers are sometimes equally captivating as the symphonies themselves. It would be good to include them in the boxset.

Thom

I like em all. The sound is really stupendous. I choose nos. 3 (by far the best), 5 and 9 although no. 8 is also very good.

8, 9, and 10 are all excellent, otherwise I find Chailly's set rather dull.

I've voted for 3 which should put it ahead of the rest.

I agree with most of the above comments but would add that if I had to choose, and I don't, I would put it ahead of Bertini as a cycle.

3 and 6. And I like the #2 Urlicht most here, quality is rather bad, but I love the voice, really.

His No.3 came out on top in last weeks BBC CD Review. It's been on my pick-up list for a while. The Beeb mentioned that the box contains CDs while the separates are CD/SACD hybrids.
