Very late to the party, but I love Egdon Heath to pieces.

8) A magical work. I love it as well.

Holst considered it his greatest work.

Great, Karl, Egdon Heath is a wonderful work! It sounds simple and peaceful, yet it's very lyrical, mysterious and evocative at the same time, with also a bold harmony since there are some passages where the tonal texture is taken to extremes and it isn't clear to define.

You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

I love the Boult 1960s (1962 I think) performance on Decca:

I will assume that is the same performance in this Alto reissue I have? Alto is not always great documenting or citing years.

Yes, I would assume these are the same recordings since I believe this is the only time he recorded The Hymn of Jesus for example.

I particularly like these ones:

David Lloyd Jones/Royal Scottish National Orchestra

André Previn/London Symphony Orchestra

Odd, or maybe be not as Richard Itter was respectful of other companies releases, that with such a large Holst discography on his label Egdon Heath a glaring omission. I agree with the consensus for Boult. I also agree with Lisztianwagner for his liking of David Lloyd-Jones from his outstanding Naxos CD. I have not heard Hickox and unusually Previn left me cold but due a revisit.

Probably a futile question, but I am compelled to ask: Is only the ballet suite from The Perfect Fool available?

I think that the Opera is supposed to be incomprehensible with the ballet music being easily the best feature Karl.

What a peculiar goal for the composer Jeffrey! Or ... supremely avant-garde  8)
