Checking MDT's list of upcoming DVD releases I found Prokofiev's L'Amour des Trois Oranges, a new production by a Russian group I am not familiar with. Tempting is the praise given the new and young conductor. But $53 plus change and that does not include shipping and the currency conversion fee charged by my bank, I have second thoughts about buying it.

The price does seem steep!

The only ballet I am actively seeking is Le Sacre.

If you find Le Sacre, would you let me know?  I've been looking for that in ballet for several years now.

Good Luck, Paul! Of course there is one by some company trying to copy the original in their own production, but it's bad, real bad!

What does exist is a documentary by a French lady and a partner, spending years going through archives and interviewing one or two surviving dancers from that original ballet, researching costume designs, in other words, they were thorough and then had the ballet recreated based on their research. Years ago Public National TV showed this film and there must be a number of people who recorded it off their TV, if they had the technical means to do it. Remember that was at least 25 years ago. I had such a copy but unfortunately the tape deteriorated and a dear gentleman transfered whatever he could onto a DVD. It's not a good copy, but at least it's there!

Now all you have to do is ask all your elderly friends if they taped the broadcast a quarter of a century ago and make a copy for you! As I said, Paul: Good Luck!  ;)

Lis, Prokofiev's L'Amour des Trois Oranges is not a ballet. It is an opera!

I have this DVD. It is good, and it is the only DVD where the opera is sung in Russian (usually it is sung in French). But I like better the DVD version for this opera from Amsterdam that was released a year ago by Opus Arte. The very talented Laurent Pelly, who worked with Marc Minkowski in the Offenbach operas and Rameau's Platee, directed this production.

I received this week another DVD version of L'Amour des Trois Oranges from the Paris opera that was released by TDK, but haven't watched it yet...

Speaking of Ballet, I watched this week a new Ballet DVD from Opus Arte: Delibes's Sylvia from a performance at the ROH 2005. Beautiful!! I bought it at MDT, but this DVD will be available in the US on January 2008.

Right you are, T.C.! It is an opera but my mistake originates with my LVD of the Maurice Sendak production which does resemble a ballet and I always treated it as such.

I shall attempt to correct the listing without lousing up everything!  0:)
