Too much resonance and weird imaging (in releases I've heard). I vaguely recall they have a unique recording technique which requires some sort of unconventional playback system.

Quote from: Spotted Horses on August 04, 2023, 11:01:27 PMA Beethoven String Quartet cycle for $3! Then, I saw it was recorded by Nimbus. Dramatically overpriced...

That probably is because of how Goodwill prices used CDs, rather than anything inherent in the set.

I thought the problem with Nimbus was that they produce everything as CD-Rs?

I've purchased a few Nimbus over the years and none were CD-R.

They recorded with a point microphone of their own invention and encode with the "Ambisonic" system. I've never seen an Ambisonic decoder offered for sale.

Reading their Wikipedia page I'm still not entirely clear if these 2 channel UHJ recordings decoded to surround are true surround of faux surround. It sounds like the latter like what BIS did with some of Suzuki's earliest recordings of JSB's cantatas.

Either way a poor decision to create some proprietary recording technique that requires specialized decoding. The only Nimbus performances I liked enough to play often is Bernard Roberts Beethoven Piano Sonata cycle which I no longer listen to since Eduardo Del Pueyo Philips or Andor Foldes DG are just as good if not better in a similar style.

Thank you.
The only Nimbus recent releases I've paid attention to are Vladimir Feltsman's.  And even his recordings I haven't kept track of. I don't remember any issues with his stuff.

It sounds like the microphone array had real surround capability, but the encoding to two channels sounds dubious.

Perhaps they could go back to that microphone array signal (assuming it was multi-channel and not encoded to 2 channels in real tim) and extract something like XY stereo, but that's not going to happen now that they are defunct and have been purchased by a holding company with no interest.

Caveats (how dare they...)   ;D :

- Use Google Chrome to do the automatic translation of the site from Czech
- no point in trying to download the complete Zip, it keeps crashing
- download them CD by CD. Even that can take several attempts for each CD.
- The numbering of CD on the webpage doesn't match the numbering of the CD in the box. The webpage supplies a breakdown to let you do the matching.
- the file tagging includes movements names and (some) performers but not all the work names.

Basically it will need a lot of patience and lots of back and forth with the relevant entry on Discogs for a correct re-tagging.

Still...

7 quids each...

worth the hassle...

Oh, I see. But usually I use PayPal for overseas/unknown vendors and they don't take it. :(

I'd go for the Boulez box and would like to search the rest but Safari on my iPad gives no translation options and I'm not going to type my credit card numbers in blindly  :'( .

Why not install Chrome for iPad to use in such instances?

I didn't realise it was that easy, it works just fine! I don't fancy the Abbado but the Boulez box has loads I like and I'd give the rest a listen. I can't find anything else, most of the albums are priced as one would expect.
