New bargains at JPC: from Orfeo, Brilliant etc. Best of the lot might be this one:

8 cds for 14.99€ (or less if purchased outside of the EU). Comes with the Myaskovsky, Prokofiev, Schnittke, Weinberg fillers.

Thanks for the heads up Andre - order in at that great price.

Sigh. That means your browser won't cache, right? You realize that caching can occur behind the reverse proxy your https connects to?

I responded in The Diner.

My apologies to everyone else for perpetuating this digression.

My pleasure! It is an excellent ensemble.

For those who never got around to buying, or are waiting for a better price, the Bach333 (English version) is now available as part of a 20% deal if you buy three items at Amazon.it. While not a great deal, especially since they charge quite a bit for the postage (unless you live in Italy) it's still the cheapest I have seen. As an experiment, I chose two €10 items to go with it, and if I send it to Sweden the total cost for all three items + postage would be €358, and if to the States €328.

Another option is an organ playing for about 60 hours on end: https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/500-years-of-organ-music/hnum/8413069
I was sorely tempted by that and almost ordered both. But I decided to stay within shouting distance of sane by ordering only the one box. I have several unheard boxes of organ anyhoo.

???

Exactly. I never have cared much for the organ (and prefer it more as a color/textural instrument). I couldn't imagine working my through 50 CDs dedicated to music for that instrument. The horror, the horror, indeed! :o

You guys sound as if you were expected to strap yourselves to a chair and listen to the whole thing all the way through. I don't get the hate for the organ, though. It seems to me that a lot of interesting stuff can be done with it, it has endless possibilities. My theory is that the instrument's long association with the church rubs many people the wrong way. That and the fact that a certain great musician and key figure of the 60s avant-garde didn't approve of it...  >:D

Stravinsky was a key figure of the 1910s avantgarde and said "the monster never breathes" as a reason not to include it in his Symphony of Psalms.

I think I get both the fascination and the abhorrence of the organ...

As for 50 hours ... I dare John to listen to every one of his Debussy discs consecutively ...

Hah! :D Debussy is my numero uno and I love his music dearly, but I wouldn't dare do this, because it would actually be a disservice to the composer. Variety is the spice of life after all!

I don't think it's a SUPER DUPER bargain, but it is the cheapest I've ever seen it across several countries: Bach 333 is 299.99 pounds in the UK. They are also ONLY charging the 3 pounds shipping, so for a US buyer, this works out to $330 or so including shipping (because it's 249.99 without VAT). This is about as low as I have ever seen it (for a US buyer, for buyers in other countries, the numbers may change).
