Yes, I have a couple of Warchal recordings of Baroque sinfonias and concertos, released on bargain label Point Classics - excellent stuff. I assume they were originally on an obscure boutique label that went out of business.

The point is that obscure, inexpensive performances can be just as good as big name major label performances. God know the latter have been responsible for plenty of junk.

I have/had a couple of CD released under that label name.  Always musicians I've never heard of, from Central/East European countries--in other words, they fit the description of "pirate labels" mentioned earlier today in this thread.  But I don't actually know that.  They may have beeb legit.   The performances themselves were generally not that memorable, which is why I'm not sure if I actually still have them.  May have given them away to the public library.

I believe the ones credited to conductors Anton Nanut and Milan Horvat are legit. Nanut's Mahler 1 and 5, and Horvat's Bruckner 4 and Dvorak 8, are good and worth hearing.

I believe Horvat's greatest claim to fame is conducting the Rach concerto for the soundtrack of the film Shine.  ::)

Which set is Horvat on? I'm afaid that there's so much music here, I'm just getting a grip on it, embarassment of riches,

I think we're confusing two tangents of this conversation.  Eyeresist and I were talking about a label called Point Classic which specialized in cheap recordings by very low profile European musicans.  They have nothing to do with the sets Bigshot is now listening to.

Just picked up the 100CD Membran Masterconcerts box for €28.99 plus €6 postage to the UK from amazon Germany

http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B001G8P3KM/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

then noticed its 28.99 on amazon.co.uk as well!  I've stuck with my German order as its 50p cheaper  ;D

Tracklist:
http://www.membran-online.de/product_info.php?products_id=818

I recognise some of the recordings, e.g. the Dorati 1812 which was on the Mercury Living Prescence label and recent box set

On amazon.com this is $352 USD and last week on amazon.co.uk this was an eye watering £400+ !!
Think last nights 56 Euro price is probably nearer the mark!

The new erato

Strangely enough the Membran CD only list contents for 94 CDs. Are there 6 CDs of documentation?

I bet you get upset every time you see a Brilliant Classics box set too!

Curious remarks like these undercut your part in the discussion, you know.  Just saying.

This is a time when I wish Que (or whichever mod was responsible) hadn't merged the threads. ::)

My money is on Que the Merger.

Fafner

I would have not believed it, but this is the response I got to my inquiry with BIS.

Dear Fafner,

I find it totally sweet of you to react on our behalf.

This time there is no sweat.  While I am shocked over the price and may talk to them, this is legitimate.  We do have a deal with the X5 Group and derive quite a healthy income from them.

But this price....I didn't know that.

Thanks ever so much for your kindness!

Best - Robert (von Bahr, CEO, BIS)

Bravo BIS for customer service, at least!

I mean, why wouldn't he reply? It's not everyday that a mythological beast from The Ring sends you an email. ;D

Maybe I'll plug "X5" into Amazon's advanced search option under "Label" and see what I come up with.

By the way, could someone enlighten me as to just why this series is called Rise of the Masters?  TIA

Dude, do you buy every $5 tie you see on the sidewalks of Times Square? ; )

(Sure, we've all seen guys who dress as if . . . .)

I can wipe my ass with two bucks or buy some music.
