Haydn, J. - Hogwood - The Symphonies £34 (ex. VAT)

Thanks, Opus106. I've wanted this for years, but buying OOP discs always made it too expensive. I just paid $59.91 for it. Woo-hoo.

Thanks a lot for that heads-up, David.  This is my first ever mp3 purchase!   8)

It was ~$1 when I bought mine just now.

Only $1, huh?  I guess David should have waited for the bargain... ;)

It's crazy: after the deduction of a "promotion" (I'm guessing these are the points or whatever that my Amazon-direct purchases promise me, and that I've always ignored, thinking I'd never bother downloading mp3s from them) and after tax, I paid $0.10 for the Big Haydn Box.  It seems wrong.

I'm also thrilled to see that the "Autorip" business is retroactive.  I wasn't paying attention to that conversation, but I have dozens of legal albums (that I purchased on disc over the past year or so) floating in my cloud....that is pretty neat.

Well, I'm sorry, Octave, but I beat even you! I apparently had accrued $2.00 worth of credits (not sure how?) so my total for the entire package was $0.00. It isn't the sort of thing I would normally buy, but what the hell, for free, it's pretty hard to beat!! It was worth it to hear The Grillers having a go at some of the quartets. :)

You mean, hearing the Grillers is worth... nothing?

Sérieusement, nice to know that this morceau was a tentation even pour le Gurnatron 8)

I never noticed that.  Apparently I have 32 albums and more than 800 tracks in my cloud.  Among it some Bach and some Billy Holiday.

Are any of these other Bach Guild "boxes" worth getting?  The "value" isn't the issue, of course, but the use of time listening to it all...that might be a concern.  A couple acquaintances have recommended the Abravanel/Utah Mahler symphonies to me, for example, which are apparently offered in the Mahler set.  (I've not seen the same enthusiasm for those recordings at GMG.)  I am trying to remember if I heard some good things about some of the Handel set contents.

In the words of John Fahey: too many records, my brain doesn't work well.

I thought we had a mp3/download recommendations and/or bargains thread, but I cannot find it for the life of me.

When I click on that link I get an error message - am I doing something wrong?

Doesn't seem like it. Looks like the Good Music Gremlins may have taken it down ;), given that it had not gone farther than two posts in two years, and then decided to merge that Haydn box thread with the present one. But if I remember correctly, the downloads bargain thread was started at the request of a few members (including yours truly), so that CD buyers weren't disappointed to find MP3 deals when they saw a new post here. ;D

I'm sure they'll survive the shock... ;)

They are in shock right now, as they arrive here to find us discussing relevance of threads, instead of, say, the Aeolian Quartet's box of Haydn quartets going for a little over £22 at Amazon UK.

The BIS essential Sibelius box for £7.99

Having seen a report elsewhere (the Radio 3 Forum) of a problem with successfully downloading the zip from play.com, can anyone here advise of a successful download? Thanks in anticipation.

I really don't want downloads here.  There's a place for them elsewhere on this forum

According to the above the downloads thread was abolished.

flyingdutchman

Abolished or unstuck as a sticky?  Either way, downloads don't belong here, IMO.

See reply 3083.  Thread was presumably deleted and merged with some other thread.

Just purchased this delivered from UK Amazon (Super Saver) for £5.33; bought it especially for Israel in Egypt and The Ways of Zion do Mourn.  Usually around the £24 mark.  Definately an overstock from Amazon as there are 30+ left, nice bargain for a Friday (if you like a bit of Handel)  :)
