I am only interested in 78 rpm bargains... and I will become righteously indignant at any hint of vinyl. Don't get me started on those awful CDs!

Oh... I almost forgot. Only Edison hill and dale recordings please.

The problem, as I understand it, is that someone did start a separate thread for downloads and a moderator merged it with the original thread without consultation.

OK guys, lets' have a quick reality check before this discussion is hijacked by solely focussing on the issue of moderating (and those who like to do so): the now much lamented separate download bargains thread actually contained only a few posts and was not in use. Download bargains were already being posted on this thread, though maybe not as much as recently.

I don't mind reinstating it, but what is the point if it will not be used?  :-\ Whatever is more convenient - separating CD and download bargains or have them in the same thread, seems to depend on personal preferences. For those who purchase downloads, which seems to be a growing minority here, a separate thread serves no purpose. Those who stick to CDs, are obviously not interested in download bargains. But that could apply, for that matter, to any particular bargain that is posted....couldn't it? So, considering the purchase of downloads is upcoming in this day and age I saw no serious abjection of promoting the use of the bargains thread for both formats. Just like the purchases thread is not off limits for posting download-only items either... And who knows, maybe some members might consider taking the jump after seeing those download bargains? :)

That having said, I'm quite open for suggestions. In the end it is about what is most convenient for most here and works.

Here's what is wrong with me. I get email updates when this thread is updated in an attempt to be quick on the draw when something really special turns up. Since I have no interest in mp3s, the more of those posted here, the more time I waste checking in for no reason.
I don't get those email notifications, but I do read every post of this thread whenever I log in and a new post has been made. But what you say about mp3s is true across the board - I have no interest in most of what gets posted here. It may not be clogging my email box, but perhaps for that reason, I feel no need to complain when somebody posts (say) a complete Scarlatti sonatas box set if I don't want to buy Scarlatti.

Those are the ones with the shellac chipmunks on the label, are they not?  Cool!  :)

Many threads get created in which little interest is shown, and the automatic ordering of threads makes them sink to where no one sees them.  That doesn't cause confusion.  Maybe it causes disappointment for the person who created the thread.  Someone created an MP3 bargains thread with the hope that it would become popular.  It would either become popular or it would effectively disappear.  I don't see how it helps to cancel that experiment by preemptively deleting the thread with its contents copied into another existing thread.

I can see where people like to hit this thread for physical cds, that's the probable attraction.

I would 99% surely, never buy an mp3 but don't mind reading about them within this thread (its still interesting).  The only mp3 I thought of purchasing was that Big Mahler Box with all the Abravanel Symphonies for £6 or so in the UK.  IIRC the USA had this as a superb deal at 99c for the lot!!

With regards to mp3, I got an email from Amazon telling me yesterday about Autorip.  Wherever you see this sign, or whenever you buy a cd which is linked to Autorip, then you will automatically get the mp3 version uploaded free to your Amazon Cloudplayer.  (Something I haven't checked out yet).  The email stated that my last 30 purchases via Amazon are all ready ripped to mp3 for me and are waiting to be picked up for shoving on the old IPad etc.

Not bad really as some of my buys have been Marketplace used cds for anything from 1p to £2 (all ripped ready).  Whereas to buy the cds as valid mp3's would cost £6.99 or whatever they charge.

So buy a cheap used cd for pennies & get free autorip or buy mp3 for 6 times as much and have nothing to hold LOL.

The main reason for myself in the UK for buying physical rather than mp3 is that many, many times the mp3 costs more; or not that much cheaper (and I feel as though I don't get nothing by buying a virtual download)

Autorip doesnt work through marketplace sellers, it has to be amazon uk.  Real shame that otherwise I would have thousands!

One tip is that the cloud player will scan your hard drive and assumes your files are all legit and then puts a copy up in the cloud at 256k quality.  So if you had some rubbishy 128k rips (yuck) you would get a free improved copy.

I am trying to work out how to claim autorip mp3s from other amazon stores, in theory I should have a number of mp3s from .com, .de and .es but no idea how I get them!

Ahhh right, I assumed you'd get MP sellers but just looking at my Autorip all of the Petrenko DSCH cycle so far is up there.  And the last buys I did.  A "click click click" Beecham Scheherazade which I had to send back is autoripped for me.  So I will be nabbing that one, must've escaped them that I bought it and returned it.

Good point about the 'foreign' Amazon sites.  I too have bought quite a few from France, Germany & loads from the USA.

May I make a suggestion to help the resolve the question of posting MP3s

If you're posting an MP3 bargain, add (MP3) at the end of the subject line.
If you're posting a CD bargain add (CD) at the end of the subject line.

The result will appear similar to how I added (Suggestion) to the subject line of this post.
That way,  the posts can easily sort themselves out, and those of us who don't want MP3s will know which posts to skip over.  Those who are purely interested in MP3 will similarly know which posts to skip over.

I suppose the time to start a distinct thread for download bargains will come, and we'll know it's the right time when MP3 downloaders start to complain about all the posts regarding CD bargains which are cluttering up this thread  :P

I like Jeffrey's idea, though I wish people would also post FLAC bargains once in a while. ;)

Probably you need to be a Schoenberg enthusiast to appreciate this, but $17.98 for an mp3 edition of the 5-CD set of the complete string quartets, plus is nigh unto a steal.

I assume that's partly a joke but FTR, I read that post and downloaded it. I also bought Badura-Skoda's Schubert set you posted a little while back. Thank you for those posts!

And I also just downloaded it (I hope it's in the format I need).  Interestingly, when you originally posted it,  the link skipped the instruction page, leaving me flummoxed about how to get the "free" part.

I noticed my mistake only today and corrected it at both places immediately.

Thanks for amending Nav, I couldn't get it work so I assumed the freebie had finished.
