Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

This probably ranks as one of the greatest super-duper cheap bargains of all times.

Gordo: Yep. I've had my eye on it for a while. It was a nice surprise to discover on a lazy Saturday morning. It's a steal at that price.

It's $62.53 over at ImportCDs, though the shipping charges will be different. I have Amazon Prime, so I think the price is about the same between them.

I did make a promise not to buy anything for the rest of 2013 unless there was a super bargain that I would be stupid not to buy, so any comments on quality are very welcome.

Full contents of the box listed here

EDIT: The only CD I have even heard is #28, Beethoven concertos with Haitink.

I got this set when it came out (much more expensive than this true bargain).  I had quite a number of the discs (bought my first Perahia vinyl in 1980!) - truly wonderful.  His more recent discs - esp Bach and Brahms - are utterly top notch.  Higlhy recommended at this price.  The presentation of the box and discs is first rate.

Let me put it this way:  I have large chunks of what's in there,  including the Mozart and Beethoven concerto cycles and all the Bach, and some of the Schumann and Chopin and Brahms,  and I'm still mighty tempted to get it.

I bought this set for $150-160, sh. & h. included, what I considered and I still consider as a bargain. It's a superb set, full of great interpretations, plus a luxury presentation and visual material added. Its 275-pages "booklet" is actually a top quality book, exactly like the book included in your Rubinstein's big box, although in a format quite easier to manage.

I love the Mozart. I have several of those discs - all are good. The Beethoven is outstanding (I have Concertos 4 and 5). The Bach is wonderful. The Chopin etudes are phenomenal. If the content interests, then you will generally be getting supurb recordings for the most part. At that price, it's a good deal even if only a dozen discs or so are of interest.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

I agree with this. I bought it for $165 or so, but certainly don't fee cheated.

The price of this keeps coming down, too.  It's a 90 CD set with beautiful packaging and very nice all color book. It's still $142, but that's less than $1.50 per disc.  The range is breathtaking, from the bach solo cello stuff to jazz, folk, ballads, soundtracks, and almost all of the cello repertoire in classical.

It's also a Sony box (like Perahia and Rubinstein), so maybe it wouldn't be unreasonable to wait a little bit.

I think it was originally about $500 in 2009, and on ebay, new and used it is still really expensive.  Maybe the price will keep falling, but the cheapness of the Amazon price now might be "final clearance"...

Yes, you're right, it's a bet. You never know.

I recall 4 or 6 months ago, its price was around $350 on Amazon.

Decisions, decisions.  :)

Looks like the Yo-Yo Ma box is sold out at Amazon.

Perahia, too, and the price went up. I'll order it at ImportCDs if I decide to buy it...

I decided to pick up the Yo-Yo Ma set from ImportCDs as a Christmas gift for a friend, figuring an extra $10 wouldn't break me.
