Yeah, I couldn't resist either. Let's see if we all have bargain basement Verdi collections soon:)   There is also yet another very cheap Giulini box "Giulini in Vienna" available for pre-order (no details yet, not even a picture). I'm quite a fan, so am curious about it....
It's all good...

Hafod,

That's a corker of a spot and SDCB !

I've ordered one, 11 in stock AMZ UK.  Probably get cancelled but they usually don't when from Amazon Direct.  Last biggie was the £15 Tchaikovsky 55cd Brill Box, now £120+, that was a year ago and that came through for many of us.

Hope this is a goer!!  Will let you all now if I get the dreaded "Sorry, cancelled email blah di blah"...

Cheers!

I first saw it yesterday morning and ordered. I had an email this morning to say it had been despatched so I decided it was safe for me to spread the word. As soon as something like this is posted obviously many orders go in quickly. The algorithm monitoring sales picks it up, recognises unusual activity, and either raises the price or withdraws the availability.

I ordered this a couple of days ago - Giulini is a great favourite of mine. Contents from Presto below - worth it for the Bruckner and a cracking Rigoletto alone. Some of the discs (especially the Beethoven) look like they may be short measure.

Thanks again for spreading the word.  I think I have only 8 or so Verdi operas, heard only around 14 (dvd/radio) etc.  I never realised he wrote this many, never really added them up before  ;D

Well, it's now the #1 bestseller in classical opera. That probably classifies as 'unusual activity'.  :)

Ordered anyway. We'll see. Thanks for the heads-up!

Holy cow. I thought I got a great price on that already at under 50. It worked out to 22. So I bought (just) one spare. Planning for an OOP resale.
Will we get cancelled?

I dont' think so. 3 Verdi boxes came out about almost simultaneously, and maybe this one just wasn't moving? Supposedly it's very flimsy packaging, and the recordings are all very good, but somewhat venerable. Probably isn't an expensive box to produce.  I watched a video of falstaff. that's my only experience with Verdi.  This will  be nice ;D

I hope you are right. To me it looked like the best box even at a sane price.

Here's a doozy: Karajan 88 disc EMI orchestral box for 80 Euros from Amazon.de

Actually, I will probably pass, but ridiculous price.  I don't understand how he can have 200 discs for each EMI and DG at the same time...does anyone know which performances/recordings are supposed to be better?

I've got the emi box and the karajan 60s / 70s boxes.  The DG boxes win for me but the EMI box is a bargain.   The DG ones are very pricey but immaculately presented.

Karajan tends to be a sore point with fanatics (thats us).
They are all good. IMO his best performances were mid fifties to late 60s. Most of that is DG.
If it's close in price I'm for DG.

Verdi - The Great Operas: 38cds from EMI now £10.99 at AmUK. The ASIN is B00A4AI17A
I have the 80 CD Decca box and a 15 CD Domingo Verdi collection and haven't played a single disc from any of them.....Easy pass.

Actually, I've always been prejudiced against Karajan, but mostly for non-musical reasons (well, and the criticism of his "slick" sound, too).  Furtwangler hated his guts, and F seemed like the good guy (I have a lot of F, but have a hard time getting past the sound).  I hate how they show K conducting in a beam of light, with his hair all done up, and his eyes closed, looking like he's spoozing in the drawers of his tux.  Something about him screams "it's all me!!". Just turns me off.  I did play his Eroica 3 from '62 or '63 and admit it was smoking.

Oh for sure a lot of hype. On the other hand he really was a superb musician.
I was in radio the tail end of the Karianne hegemony, and built-up a little bit of resentment and resistance. I would by choice program other conductors in repertoire if I had the option. It helped of course that emi and London head cheap reissues with different conductors such as Klemperer. But I had knowledgeable tasteful friends who swore by the man.

People don't realize how many records he sold. I saw the earnings numbers for musicians from recording income in the 1960s. For several years up until about 1967 he made as much as a Beatle. I read that 90% of DG's profit came from his recordings in some years.

I'm exactly the same. The feeling that the music is simply the medium to promote the musician. I can never get past it, but I have a few of his discs.

I've just noticed that price hike too.  Got my order in yesterday - although not before the price had gone up one whole penny to £11.  Strange.

It has now gone up further to £42.28. I ordered mine on Sunday for £11. Seems that there will be some delay at least, but let's hope they'll be able to deliver it in the end.
