Most of this, also "Gruppen" is readily available (maybe most difficult to separately obtain would be the first 5 discs). Opera excerpts are also kind of ridiculous for such a set. But for those who do not already own most the desirables from this one, it may be a decent bargain.

I agree! Opera excerpts are a strange phenomenon. I rather they included a full opera than excerpts/highlights disks...

Yes. Excerpts discs are pretty much dead plastic to me. I much prefer an opera. Even a Verdi opera!  >:D

Actually with such a set celebrating an orchestra, I'd probably prefer no opera at all. But excerpts is really half-baked. Especially with Goetterdaemmerung. I'd rather hear a disc with bleeding chunks of orchestral Wagner Preludes and excerpts instead of 60 min torn from a >4 hour opera.

Honestly, that disc is a bit of a turkey. It's the worst Gruppen I've ever heard, and there are better performances of the two Kurtag works out there.

I agree. I don't care for Gruppen, but even I can tell that the recording really sucks compared to the WDR-Koln one.
Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

Amazon.de has the Heifetz Complete Album Collection for 155.97 Euros.  What do people think of this set?

Heifetz can be an acquired taste, but considering his legendary status this is a must if you love the violin as an instrument. The sound can be a bit "historical" at times, but the performances are mostly very good to excellent. It is also an excellent exposure to a wide realm of the violin repertoire. For this price (I paid twice the amount back in 2011) it is a must if you enjoy this type of music (violin concertos, chamber music).

Brilliant's 15 CD box Passion - Sacred Masterpieces, with some pretty worthwhile performances of major choral works (e.g. Bach St Matthew & St John Passions, and the Messiah, from Cleobury) is currently in the marketplace at Amazon.co.uk for £6.98 (plus £1.26 for UK delivery).
Way below any other price I've seen.

bigshot

There are some artists where it's worth listening to absolutely everything they ever recorded. Heifetz is one of them. Like Caruso, Rubinstein, Horowitz, Richter, etc... even the worst things they ever did are still suffused with genius. I can't imagine being interested in violin music and not having that Heifetz box.

Great spot, Orpheus!

I think I might now have the complete complete works of Bach (Teldec, Hanssler & Brilliant Classics)  :)

If you haven't heard much of his playing, I would strongly suggest trying a disc or two before dropping €156 on him. I can't stand his playing style of the stereo era -- "impatient" remains my one-word summary. What I've heard of his earlier recordings is better, but not nearly enough for me to even consider investing in a big box.

I don't think I'm alone on that, though he obviously has many enthusiastic fans too. If I were you I would figure out where I stood on that scale before purchasing this.

Survey after survey ranks him the top. The better the survey, ie the more restricted it is to good violnists, the better he does. Yet like Pat I have problems. I actively dislike most of the chamber concerts with Piatigorsky because of Heifetz. He rately blends, he sounds awful sometimes. Yet his concerto tecordings always impress, as do his sonata recordings.  I recommend the 9 or 10 cd sonatas set, which is cheap. ShouldI  conclude he couldn't share the spotlight?

For the concertos I have this

If nothing else, a good way to have basic repetory done in classic 20th century style.
I also suggest his recording of the Bach solo works.

I have seen his alleged dislike of sharing the limelight spoken of in other placed.
