I am not tempted either. I have a small Original Jackets box (10 CDs) that Arkiv put on clearance a while back, scattered other CDs, and the new remastered Scriabin three CD set.  Enough for me of Horowitz.
Besides there is Rubinstein.  I am listening to the  1930s recording of the Nocturnes right now.. CDs 7 and 8 of the BRB and first time these early recordings reveal themselves as transfers from 78s.  First 6 CDs were transferred in a way that avoided hiss and made them sound mostly like c.1950 mono.

Horowitz OJC - $75 - Prime

I'm curious: why did you mention "Prime" next to the price? Is there a different price for non-Prime customers?

The Ashkenazy box might tempt me at a good price, as would a Gilels box.

Agreed, but this item's price exceeds the free shipping threshold, so everyone can buy it for $74.96.

That's what I remember as well. Amazon.it seems to cycle the box prices...?

That is a great bargain. And yet it does not tempt me. I am not sure that that is a good thing. I'd be happier if I were tempted but resolute.
My only excuse is Horowitz has never really impressed me. And there is so much mono.

I think I'd rather have the Carnegie Hall Collection but that is not an SDCB.

Ahh, I think the Horowitz OJC is a keeper even though it is somewhat uneven in quality/performances/recording.
Perhaps I should get a 2nd copy?  :P

Then you could have one copy for each ear.

Well, although the order of the day is, apparently, to shoot against Horowitz, I still consider him as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th Century, and the OJC as a superb document.

I love Perahia's artistry; but, IMO, Horowitz was greater. Just for the record.  :)

I agree. There is a tendency today to look down at artists of the past like Horowitz and Heifetz because they had a different approach than current artists do. But that is *exactly* why I like them. Totally unique, and even their mistakes are interesting. Also, I think there is a tendency in classical music criticism to parrot the general consensus opinion, even when it isn't based on any kind of personal experience with the recordings. I find that a lot online, particularly with Heifetz and Karajan.

Yes, I don't see why Horowitz seems so unpopular. Besides, the current pricing on the Horowitz OJC provides an amazingly affordable gateway to Horowitz's artistry. Now I wish Sony released an Ormandy OJC box!   >:D

You guys can now explain the popularity of th Monteux, Rubinstein, or Bernstein boxes.

I didn't even see that he (or Heifetz or other oldies) seems unpopular!

Hard to argue a guy is unpopular when his ENTIRE RECORDED LEGACY is in print.

If you look at the track listings a lot of the cds have very short runtimes, so you are not getting the equivalent of 70cds worth of music.

Horowitz isn't my cup of tea either, fast fingers but not much behind the notes. Murray Perahia, on the other hand...

has nothing behind the notes?
