You know you do bring up something that I wish to resolve and that's listening to more of Glazunov's music as it's been probably five years or so since I've done any kind of serious listening. Perhaps I was a bit 'harsh' in my criticism, but as I've stated before, it wasn't without foundation. I should get out the Serebrier series on Warner and give those discs some spins. Unfortunately, all of the Glazunov belongs to my dad, so I might just buy Serebrier's series since it's boxed up now just to have a copy of my own.

If you are shopping, John, you might see if these are available. I got them several years ago (all except symphony #1, dammit!!) and they are really quite good. I can't give you any hints; I got them on eBay with a box full of Russian disks.

Yep, my dad mentioned how he liked Svetlanov's Glazunov cycle. I'm just blowing smoke mainly, I don't know if I want to explore Glazunov's music again anytime soon since the last endeavor didn't leave me with a good impression. I do know, however, one work of Glazunov's that I love and it's called From the Middle Ages, which is an orchestral work. Jarvi's performance of this work is the best I've heard:



Has anyone heard this recording? It's quite good.

The Svetlanov Russian music in the French import box sets is consistently great with incredible sound. The Glazunov is no exception.

Well, I like Rozhdestvensky's cycle myself (a bit glassy and brittle at times thought) and I do have 3 other cycles as well, including Serebrier, Jarvi, and Fedoseyev.  Svetlanov is a bit slow for me, but I do have some of his recordings as well.

I already have too much of this box in separates, otherwise this would have been a no brainer. All performances are excellent to outstanding, especially the Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms.

The Mercury Living Presence box is less alluring to me, only because I enjoy a strangely high ratio of redundancy there, 13 out of the 50 . . . which means, too, that a large proportion of the new-to-me discs are Pops-ly or Warhorse-ish, and therefore rather low priority (YMMV).
