Anything I've ever bought from Japan has been quite expensive - you were very lucky to get that box at such a good price :)

I was surprised too! Japan does seem rather expensive, but some amazing bargains turn up by surrounds here and there. I think there was a sale of some sort for classical box sets because they were all much cheaper than I've seen at my local classical music CD shop!

Where do you guys shop in Japan?  :)

I've been to the Tower Records in Akihabara, Tokyo, a couple of times and I think there is a huuuuge one in Shibuya which I haven't been to yet. Supermarkets are so cheap! Buying tofu even in one of the classier more expensive supermarkets is a fifth of the cost it is to get the same amount in Australia! Although I suspect most tourists don't really go to Japan to buy tofu from supermarkets.

cdjapan.co.jp is a very nice online shop ... I've used it mostly to buy jazz (and there are many Japanese reissues there in the 1000-1500 yen range, if you're okay with a cheap and slow shipping option, that's not expensive at all), with classical I don't have much of a clue yet how the Japanese market works and what's there that's not there here etc. - bought a pair of Sofronitzky Scriabin discs (Denon) recently and have the Häfliger/Dähler "Schwanengesang" on the way right now, but other than that the few other Japanese classical releases I have were picked up via marketplace offerings (and in most cases I wasn't even aware I'd end up with a Japanese edition).

It's always been affordably available in Europe, but at 14.95 € now from amazon Spain, Gary Bertini's superb set of Gustav Mahler's symphonies (including Das Lied von der Erde and the adagio from the Tenth), on 11 CDs, is a steal:

Amazon Spain also has Fritz Reiner - The Complete Chicago Symphony Recordings for €73 (66cd)

I want to purchase Immerseel's complete recordings of Schubert and Beethoven. Anyone know where the best price is to be had?

I've bought some things from Amazon.JP and gotten suuuuper fast shipping.  I got the Westminster orchestral box for $200, new, and the Van Nevel "Labyrinth" box Used for $35.
It's all good...

Right now try Presto Classical - excluding the UK VAT, the price for both of those box sets combined is US $45 (41 euros). I know because I bought them there. :)

For comparison, Amazon.de has new marketplace copies of those sets for a combined 47 euros.

Flash sale warning:

Amazon.De is selling a box of Mozart operas by Gardiner at unbeatable price. 7 operas, 18 cd's , 30 oïros. It's one of those 'flash sales' that occur once in a while for a very limited period of time.

The Tower in Shibuya and Shinjuku are the ones to go to.  In Shinjuku and Ochanomizu (next station from Akihabara) has Disk Union.  Not for mail order though.  However, if you are there go to both Tower and Disk Union.  The latter has used discs and they are in immaculate shape usually.  Japanese take care of their discs.

Thank you very much for this post! Next time I'm in Tokyo I'll check out Disk Union as well. I usually prefer not to shop online (haven't had very reliable mail service to my place) so this is all good. :)

My pleasure.  I used to live in Japan and visit twice yearly.  Disk Union's biggest classical shop is on the 8th floor in a building in Shinjuku next to Kinokuniya book store.  Tower in Shinjuku is outside the South exit of the station.

Thank God! Then I don't need to buy it.

Not to worry, soon it will be up again in the list, I will alert the present company again, when it is.

The price is now EUR 38.99.

Sure it is, but for 3 hours it was available for 18:56 no postage charged. Should have set your alarm clock.

You're a cruel one Harry. I'm not very interested in the organ (I have a couple of Bach sets), but cannot resist a cheap set.

Yes this was a irresistible set, one of the sets that had the highest score in selling figures, almost 74 %. The rest in the line was far under that figure.
