I have Naxos through my school, and the sad thing is almost no one uses it.

I'll have to check out the Symphony no. 1, chances are i won't like it, but i really wan't to like new music. I love anticipating new music in other generas, so i hope i'll eventually learn to love the post modern style.

I think Symphony No. 1 is quite an early work and not indicative of the later pieces with which he is, perhaps, now more closely associated. So I'm guessing you'll enjoy it. :)

And you were correct. Much more tonal. Thanks :)

Carter - String Quartet #5 (Naive)

This is strangely the only Carter quartet I've heard, and it is indeed astonishing.

Nagano/Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin--Adams, El NiƱo
Segerstam/HPO--Rautavaara, Symphony #8, Harp Concerto
Segerstam/HPO--Rautavaara, Garden of Spaces, Clarinet Concerto
Franck/National Orchestra of Belgium--Rautavaara, Book of Visions
Layton/Polyphony--Whitacre, Cloudburst

Only one rule,
1. The works have to have been composed in the last (approx.) 10 years.

Rautavaara's 8th Symphony The Journey, composed in 1999.

"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Agreed fully. I forgot about Whitacre, great composer for choral works!

Lethevich

Vasks - Distant Light (concerto for violin & string orchestra) & Voices (symphony no.1 for string orchestra) (Kremer)

Just got this (from the Library) today...can't say it's the "best album" from that last 10 years (based on the parameters spelled out in the first post), but wanted to add it for discussion anyway...I didn't expect to like this, but I really do...I just must be in the mood or something...normally this isn't my cup of tea...

Catison

Some quick ones from some of my favorites:

This one has Wuorinen's Fourth String Quartet from 2000.

This one has Wuorinen's Lepton for celesta, harp, and piano.  I really like this recording too, because it has Time Encomium, one of Wuorinen's best (but from 1968-9).

Reich's You Are Variations and Cello Counterpoint.  Two new Reich pieces from the most consistent minimalist.

I'll also echo El Nino, My Father Knew Charles Ives, and The Dharma at Big Sur as mentioned above.
