Nice neighbor to arrange that for you!

We received at least 12 inches.  Will take another measurement or two; hard to tell with the wind having blown a bit and created drifts.  I'm back inside for a bit after 3 solid hours spent shoveling with more to do still.  I did get a nice break though; a neighbor (who I had never met before) offered to help me with the end of my driveway (the worst area to shovel as you know).  What a godsend!  He did the yeoman's part of the work [I widened it after he left so that a friend of mine could get his truck into my driveway].  A bit more to do around my vehicle and also some other pieces of the pie, but I was able to get the sidewalk and a path to the front door.  Still snowing here, but lightly and not steadily, so I think that we're through with the worst of it (Knock on wood.).  The good news:  no power outages and the majority of the snow was the light fluffy stuff.   :)

Wondering how @owlice and others here faired?

That's the worse thing about January snow around here. It takes a long time to disappear, especially when you get slammed with the high amount we got. I'm getting ready to go take care of the extra few inches that fell last night.

From my observation post I can see a gaggle of kids is shoveling our sidewalk and driveway.

How did the shoveling/snow blowing go Tony?

The shoveling was easy today. Most of the hard work was yesterday.

The big challenge was filling the bird feeders that are located at the far end of the property. I was feeling bad for the poor feathered creatures, so I made the trek through about 16 inches of snow to get to the feeders. Snowshoes and a new set of knees would have come in handy.

Well, unusual storm for us, i.e. the temps did not rise above freezing to melt the winter mix on my driveway and cul-de-sac, i.e. still looks similar to my pic from the previous post - we got a little extra precipitation on Sunday but still frozen sleet/ice on the driveway - cleaned off our two cars but don't shovel anymore (pushing 80 and a cardiac patient, so forbidden!) - Susan has a major dental appointment on Thursday (4 new crowns) but don't think we will be able to get out of our uphill cul-de-sac - will likely have to re-schedule her appointment - we usually shop for food on Friday but not sure we can?  This is an unusual storm for us but luckily we did NOT lose power.  Dave  >:(

That was very nice of you to make such an effort to get to your feeders!   :)  And, yes, I too was shoveling a lot recently (more today and more tomorrow).  Also, I had to sand and salt various areas...so it goes!  :)  Hope that you don't get more of it this coming weekend.

Glad that your power stayed on!

Sorry to hear about your driving problems.  Do they (the PTB) ever sand and salt in your area?  If so, I'm guessing not a lot of equipment to do the job?

Stay safe,

Hi K - yes, brine was applied before the storm hit us but only to the major roads - so no use to the smaller neighborhood roads and certainly not our small cul-de-sac - also in the 20 degree F range (or lower which we hit the teens at night), the brine is less effective.  Our only hope is for the temps to go into the higher 30s F or more - BUT we have plenty of food and the power is on!  ;D  Dave

I would take those conditions in a heartbeat. Here in the Boston area, the temperature was 11 F. degrees (which is about -11 C.) when I woke up this morning. It's not going to get above freezing until next week at the earliest, so all the snow from the last storm isn't going anywhere for a while.

Sounds quite nippy and all over the place temperature-wise!

Still freezing here and supposed to drop into the negative numbers (about -18C).

Yes, I heard from Our Man in Port St Lucie today (25° there today). He still has warm garments in his closet from life in the Northeast, but by all reports this is an interest people-watching time.....

Aye, bitter cold, but at least it looks like the storm they're monitoring isn't coming inland.

We received about 40 cm of snow from that event - about 16" - no issues with power, due to it being very light and fluffy... but oh boy, was it cold! Very unusual to snow so heavily with the temperature down around -18ºC the entire time (0ºF). The snow, of course, is still around and quite a load it is... but as long as it doesn't go above freezing, it's not too difficult. It's been cold all week to boot, with lows around -20ºC (-4ºF) and some mornings well down into the negative 20s. Tonight we're expecting -22ºC (-8ºF).
I'm glad the heat is included in my rent here - otherwise the electric bill would be brutal.

40 cm of snow is a lot! Good to hear there was no power outages. It seems the storm wasn't so bad for the electric grid after all. Do you know how many Americans lost power?

It has been a little bit colder here too, between about -13°C and -18°C. The latter half of January and the first half of February (midwinter) is statistically the coldest time here so this coldness is only expected. At this point there is also more light. Almost 8 hours between sunrise and sunset.  :D

I did some additional measuring; I think that we received 15 inches.  And, yes, the temps have been brutally cold lately.  To answer @71 dB , I heard about 1 million Americans lost power...next day heard 800,000 (was that updates, I don't know).  From what I understand, Tennessee was hit hard and I also parts of Mississippi.  And they're a lot of people still without power--don't know the numbers.

I sympathize with @krummholz about energy bills; they can be brutal!

Thanks for this info!  :)  1 million people is of course a lot, but they said 140 million people are in danger of losing power. Obviously it could have been much worse...
