Which is the one to get?

Argerich with Dutoit and the MSO on EMI?

I'm not keen on the Argerich.  My favorites are Rubinstein, Pollini, Pires, both Zimmerman discs and Francois.

That's precisely why i'm here. This forum needs a villain of sort else strange things are prone to occur, such as people believing that Elgar is a greater composer then Beethoven, or that every composer is 'great' as long as somebody out there likes their music. Great Gable

I have the two with Zimmerman/Giulini and they are very good. I also have several versions of each concerto singularly, with I think, 4 or 5 by Rubinstein. One of them he takes the slow movement a little fast for my own tastes but it can't be considered a criticism and his delicacy of playing more than makes up for it. Another one I have is Pogorelich's no. 2 with Abbado. I remember reading the review in Penguin (can't find the old edition) and they didn't like it at all. It's my favourite - displaying lot's of fire and passion - wonderful.

I always hoped Ashkenazy would do the two - I love the rest of his solo Chopin.

I have not heard Pogorelich here, but as a fiery PC#2 there is the Haskil/Markevitch rendition which is definitely among my favorites.

Seconded. As for Argerich/Dutoit, I wasn't as impressed as I'd hoped to be. :-\

His early recording of number 2 on Testament is quite good but not up with the best performances.
