Food for thought: I moved Fischer's Brilliant  set of the symphonies from my main collection to the tiny one I keep at our country cabin. Well, I've never listened to that many Haydn symphonies. Every time I go up there I put them discs in the tiny cd player and wallow in Haydn while reading or paying scrabble. There's no way one can tire of, or become blasé listening to Papa's symphonies !

One can learn the essence of the Baroque from Bach, of the Renaissance from Josquin, of the Romantic from Beethoven.

For the Classical, Papa knows best.

I believe Haydn's music is not only the essence of Classical but also the essence of good life. Haydn is a teacher of happiness.

IIRC it was one of these situations where Haydn had been more in love with his wife's sister but she entered a nunnery, so he married the other sister and it didn't turn out very well.
(Unlike Mozart who apparently was happier with Constanze despite also having been originally more fond of Antonia Weber.)

This is the gentleman in him speaking. In reality, he was attracted to the charms of other women because his wife had none. She was an untamed shrew.  ;D

This weekend, we've been listening to the last ten Haydn Piano Trios, and enjoying them very much.

I'm with you there, Frau H. - I can't stand them either.

Seriously, it's a strange statement, suggesting that sex should not be indulged in for pleasure, but only for procreation, and that it had to stop when they discovered it was producing no offspring (the Biblical example of Abraham and Sarah might have given them a reason to continue).

Wasn't Dvořák another who fell in love with one sister and married another?

The Haydns' distaste for one another is pretty well established. It seems as if Joseph's wife is one of the very few people that Joseph didn't get along with!
Every single post on the forum is unnecessary. Including the ones that are interesting or useful.

Is my favourite, 26, one of the last 10?

Bloody Haydn numbering. I mean Piano Trio No. 40 in F-sharp minor Hob. XV:26

Good luck in finding any sexual pleasure whatsoever with a beastly shrew like Haydn's wife.  ;D

And I see nothing wrong in his desire to have children. (There is some speculation that he did have a son with Luigia Polzelli).

yes I love that one. It's dedicated to Haydn's London honeybunny, Rebecca Schroeter, just like the preceding G major, with the alla Zingarese finale. The next one, nr 41, in the superdark E flat minor key is great, too.

He said that he is healthy and happy. He has been ripping thousands of CDs and scanning the included booklets. He is active on Bluesky if you want to find him there.
